Wine club - Roger Scruton puts Thongue in cheek

Roger Scruton
Monday 4th July 2005
The Cotes de Thongue has begun a regime of penitence, whips included, writes Roger Scruton
You don't hear much about the Cotes de Thongue, whose wine is sold as a vin de pays to a discerning clientele of bondage freaks. Made from the Sauvignon Blanc, this thong-song is far removed from the crystal purity of Sancerre. Thick and earthy, it has a backbone of acidity groaning under a donkey-load of ripe fruit. It came down on our tinned sardines like the Last Judgement and wiped all trace of them away. A huge and stunning rebuke to our culinary habits, it has begun a regime of penitence, whips and thongs included.
The red from the Estremadura region of Portugal is a full, black, mouth-coating wine, made by the traditional method of foot-treading in lagares , followed by ageing in French oak. This gives you all of Portugal in a mouthful - the burning hillsides, the beautiful 16th-century Quinta of the Tavares da Silva family, and the leathery feet of peasants who have pressed the aroma of cigars and the taste of dead badger into the grapes. This is a wine that is as well made and interesting as any you will find, were you to make the mistake of travelling to Portugal. So cancel that holiday now.

Harmonia Mensurarum Whatever Newton's intentions may have been, events took a different turn when Bentley enlisted the bright young (27) mathematician Roger Cotes (1682-1716) to do the actual editing of Newton's great work. Cotes was the newly appointed professor of astronomy at Trinity College, a position he had gained with Bentley's support. It soon became clear to Newton that this new edition was not going to be an easy ride. Shortly after the project began, Cotes wrote to inform Newton of two errors he had found in a table of integrals referenced in the corollary of Proposition XCI. In reply, Newton tried to dampen his enthusiasm I thank you for your letter and the corrections... I would not have you be at the trouble of examining all the demonstrations in the Principia. It's impossible to print the book without some faults, and if you print by the copy sent you, correcting only such faults as occur in reading over the sheets to correct them as they are printed off, you will have labor more than it's fit to give you. Apparently a cursory approach to the new edition wasn't what Cotes had expected. He showed the letter to Bentley, and asked him to clarify the scope of the task. Bentley wrote back to Newton:

GENERAL HINTS Food and wine are two of the great joys in life and a successful combination can greatly enhance your enjoyment of both. (The wrong choice and your experience can be similarly diminished!) The following chart is just a guide matching the body of the wine with the dominant characteristics of the food. As a rule a delicate dish is matched with a delicate wine, a more robust dish calls for a fuller-bodied choice. You do not have to stick to this slavishly but it might help you avoid an acknowledged no-no. Experiment. Have fun. Enjoy finding out what works best for your palate. And e-mail us if you've discovered a fab combination we could all share. WOL Tip: If you intend to enjoy several wines: serve the lighter before the heavier, white before red, drier wines before sweeter and younger wines before older ones. WOL Tip: Aperitifs. The French often drink sweet white wines before food and sherry seems to be making a fashionable reappearance in England and the States - which may seem to go against the 'dry' before 'sweet' advice. An aperitif should excite your palate for the delights ahead so if a crisp, light dry white, or a glass of champagne is not for you have fun finding out what does work for your taste buds.

Newton-Cotes formulas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Newton-Cotes formula In numerical analysis , the Newton-Cotes formulas , also called the Newton-Cotes rules , are a group of formulas for numerical integration (also called quadrature ). They are named after Isaac Newton and Roger Cotes It is assumed that the value of a function f is known at equally spaced points x i , for i n . (If the evaluation points are not assumed to be equally spaced, another class of formulas, called Gaussian quadrature formulas, can be derived.) There are two types of Newton-Cotes formulas, the "closed" type which uses the function value at all points, and the "open" type which does not use the function values at the end points. The closed Newton-Cotes formula of degree n is stated as where x i h i x , with h (called the step size ) equal to ( x n x n . The w i are called weights As can be seen in the following derivation the weights are derived from the Lagrange basis polynomials . This means they depend only on the x i and not on the function f L x ) is the interpolation polynomial in the Lagrange form for the given data points ( x f x x n f x n The open Newton-Cotes formula of degree n is stated as The weights are found in a manner similar to the closed formula.

The final was well fought and closely contested. In the morning, Aukland started well winning the first game in each match; however in two of the matches Hurlingham fought back winning the second game. In each of these the third game went to the last hoop with Hurlingham eventually emerging victorious in both. In the afternoon, Hurlingham has two straight wins with Auckland winning the other two in three games (Eugene Brady doing very well to beat Nelson Morrow, the current holder of the Golf Croquet Selectors Weekend event).

Administrative/Biographical History
Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was born at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, on 25 December 1642. He attended Grantham Grammar School, 1654-1656, before matriculating at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1661 (B.A., 1665), where he became a Fellow in 1667. In 1669 he was appointed Lucasian Professor at the university. Newton was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1672, and served as its President, 1703-1727. He was the Member of Parliament for Cambridge University, 1689 and 1701-1702. Newton's work on optics was published in 1704, and his research on the laws of motion appeared in his 'Principia', published in 1687. His other work included theological writings and the use of astronomy to try to amend ancient chronology. He was knighted in 1705, and died at Kensington on 20 March 1727.
