Cardano Girolamo (1502-1576) Nasce a Pavia e studia a Padova medicina.

British Contemporaries of Newton, Taylor, Maclaurin and Simpson
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. David Gregory Halley Ditton Cotes ... Stewart It was almost a matter of course that the English should at first have adopted the notation of Newton in the infinitesimal calculus in preference to that of Leibnitz and consequently the English school would in any case have developed on somewhat different lines to that on the continent, where a knowledge of the infinitesimal calculus was derived solely from Leibnitz and the Bernoullis. But this separation into two distinct schools became very marked owing to the action of Leibnitz and John Bernoulli, which was naturally resented by Newton's friends; and so for forty or fifty years, to the disadvantage of both sides, the quarrel raged. The leading members of the English school were Cotes Demoivre Ditton David Gregory Halley Maclaurin Simpson , and Taylor . I may, however, again remind my readers that as we approach modern times the number of capable mathematicians in Britain, France, Germany and Italy becomes very considerable, but that in a popular sketch like this book it is only the leading men whom I propose to mention. To David Gregory, Halley and Ditton I need devote but few words.

Roger Cotes ' mother was Grace Farmer, who came from Barwell in Leicestershire, and his father was Robert Cotes who was the rector of Burbage. Roger had a brother Anthony one year older than himself, and a sister Susanna who was one year younger. He attended Leicester School and by the age of twelve his teachers had already realised that he had an exceptional mathematical talent. His uncle, the Reverend John Smith, was keen to give Roger every chance to develop these talents and so Roger went to live with him so that he might be personally tutored. Roger later attended the famous St Paul's School in London, but he continued to be advised by his uncle and the two exchanged letters on mathematical topics during the time that Roget spent at school in London. Roger matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, on 6 April 1699 as a pensioner, meaning that he did not have a scholarship and paid for his own keep in College. He graduated with a B.A. in 1702 and remained at Cambridge where he was elected to a fellowship in 1705. In January 1706 he was nominated to be the first Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy. This was a remarkable achievement for Cotes who, at that time, was on 23 years of age. His exceptional abilities had been fully appreciated, however, by many at Cambridge such as

Small crack at top of upper joint, otherwise a fine copy. Second edition (first, 1738) of one of the earliest courses of scientific lectures to be given in England ¯ John Keill had begun lecturing in Oxford about two years earlier. Cotes composed these lectures jointly with Whiston. The appendix contains the only English translation of Newton's law of cooling, as well as one paper by Halley and two by Jurin. This is one of the few monographs by the brilliant pupil and friend of Newton, who died untimely at the age of thirty-three. Babson 343. Not in Wallis.
