CHAPTER 14
BUNKER HILL TO TRENTON
Advantages of the British. 133. Advantages of the British. At first sight it seems as if the Americans were very foolish to fight the British. There were five or six times as many people in the British Isles as there were in the continental colonies. The British government had a great standing army. The Americans had no regular army. The British government had a great navy. The Americans had no navy. The British government had quantities of powder, guns, and clothing, while the Americans had scarcely any military stores of any kind. Indeed, there were so few guns in the colonies that one British officer thought if the few colonial gunsmiths could be bribed to go away, the Americans would have no guns to fight with after a few months of warfare.

CHAPTER 11
BRITAIN'S COLONIAL SYSTEM
England's early liberal colonial policy.
England's changed colonial policy. 103. Early Colonial Policy. At the outset, England's rulers had been very kind to Englishmen who founded colonies. They gave them great grants of land. They gave them rights of self-government greater than any Englishmen living in England enjoyed. They allowed them to manage their own trade and industries as they saw fit. They even permitted them to worship God as their consciences told them to worship him. But, as the colonists grew in strength and in riches, Britain's rulers tried to make their trade profitable to British merchants and interfered in their government. On their part the colonists disobeyed the navigation laws and disputed with the royal officials. For years Britain's rulers allowed this to go on. But, at length, near the close of the last French war Mr. Pitt ordered the laws to be enforced. Difficulties in enforcing the navigation laws.

American novelist who is best remembered for his novels of frontier life, such as The Last of the Mohicans Encyclopedia Cooper, James Fenimore, 1789–1851, American novelist, b. Burlington, N.J. He was the first important American writer to draw on the subjects and landscape of his native land in order to create a vivid myth of frontier life. In 1790 Cooper's family moved to Cooperstown, N.Y., a frontier settlement founded by his father near Otsego Lake. The landscape and history of the area was to greatly influence many of his most famous works. Sent to Yale at 13, Cooper was dismissed for a disciplinary reason in his third year. Soon after he went to sea; commissioned as a U.S. midshipman, he served until 1811, at which time he married and settled into life as a gentleman farmer. Cooper's literary career, which covers a period of 30 years and includes more than 50 publications, began in 1820 with the appearance of

an English novel which had come into his hand. "Try," said his wife. In November, 1820, the novel, Precaution , was published. No one reads the book to-day; it is doubtful if many of Cooper's contemporaries read it, but some of his friends seemed to find evidence of promise amid its crudities and encouraged the author to go on. The next year he had something better to present them; this time it was The Spy , a tale of the Revolution.
    The Spy.
This famous novel had some foundation in historical fact. Cooper had heard from John Jay, years before, an account of a patriot spy who had been in his service during the war; this was the germ of the narrative. The story was vivid and impressive; it was full of local color; it appealed to the patriotism of readers. In many ways it was the best piece of fiction that had been produced in this country, and even permitted comparison with Scott. Its success was immediate and unprecedented at home, while in England its success was relatively as great. It was translated into French and then into other European languages. It was dramatized and long remained popular on the stage. Numerous imitations were inspired; and the hero of the novel, Harvey Birch, found a place in the popular heart. Between 1820 and 1830, Cooper produced eleven novels.

  • Examining the censuses and interpreting the details Making contact with a descendant of the pottery owner
  • My next step was to look at all the census returns from 1851 to 1891, extracting the names of everybody who might have worked in the Pottery, while other names were added from local parish records . One important 'find' from 1851 was a pottery model-maker from Staffordshire lodging in Bishop Auckland, confirmation perhaps that the Pottery was making decorative objects. The census returns gave details of the pottery workers and recorded their and their children's birthplaces and ages. From this information, it was possible to follow their movements before arriving at Canney Hill and to discover where they had gained their experience. I was particularly interested in the principal character in this story, John Cooper, who was owner of the pottery for a substantial part of its life. I discovered that he had co-owned a pottery in Jack Lane, Hunslet, Leeds, and before that he worked in Bradford. I appealed to the Derbyshire Family History Societies for information...

Photo autographed Southport, 1937 Born on 11 August 1888 at Maiden Erleigh, Berks, the only son of William Owen Nares . He was educated at Reading School and, having contemplated a business career, was persuaded by his mother to try the stage. He studied under Rosina Filippi, in 1908, and his first engagement was in 1909 at the Haymarket Theatre. Before Ivor Novello came along, he was the big heart-throb of his generation both in the West End and on the screen. His health was always delicate, which added a romantic air to his appearance and contributed considerably towards his appeal to his audiences. The plays he appeared in tended to be very "middle-brow" and un-memorable, but he became immensely popular. His golden period was the early 1920's when he became a true "matinée idol" and was adored by a huge number of fans. (For years, through my childhood, women would ask me, when they heard my name, if I was related to him and even as I youngster I was not unaware of a certain look in their eyes!!) In addition to his busy stage career he appeared in over 40 films. Many of these were silent but his stage experience meant he was very much in demand when "talkies" took off. In some ways he was past his best by this stage and the roles he was given were really just providing support for rising stars like Jessie Matthews and Gracie Fields as well as other well-known names like Basil Rathbone, John Mills, & John Gielgud (who read one of the lessons at his memorial service). As well as acting he did well as both manager and producer.
