John B Conway Professor and Head Department of Mathematics University of Tennessee Knoxville, TN 37996-1300, USA Research Interests Short Biography I was born, raised, and educated in New Orleans, La, receiving my BS from Loyola University in 1961. In 1965 I got a PhD from LSU and began my career as a mathematician at Indiana University where I remained until I accepted the job here as head of the department in 1990. I spent my first sabbatical in 1972 at the Free University of Amsterdam, and I have spent summers at Berkeley (1968) and the University of Grenoble (1981). I have had 19 PhD students. Here are some photos of me and my students taken at the SEAM 2000 at the University of Virginia. Books I have written a new book, A Course in Operator Theory , published by the American Mathematical Society in its Graduate Studies in Mathematics series. This book assumes familiarity with basic functional analysis through Banach algebras. Most of the work of John Horton Conway , a mathematician at Gonville and Caius College of the University of Cambridge , has been in pure mathematics. For instance, in 1967 he discovered a new groupsome call it "Conway's constellation"that includes all but two of the then known sporadic groups. (They are called "sporadic" because they fail to fit any classification scheme.) Is is a breakthrough that has had exciting repercussions in both group theory and number theory. It ties in closely with an earlier discovery by John Conway of an extremely dense packing of unit spheres in a space of 24 dimensions where each sphere touches 196,560 others. As Conway has remarked, "There is a lot of room up there." In addition to such serious work Conway also enjoys recreational mathematics. Although he is highly productive in this field, he seldom publishes his discoveries. One exception was his paper on "Mrs. Perkin's Quilt," a dissection problem discussed in "Mathematical Games" for September, 1966. My topic for July, 1967, was sprouts, a topological pencil-and-paper game invented by Conway and M. S. Paterson. Conway has been mentioned here several other times. This month we consider Conway's latest brainchild, a fantastic solitaire pastime he calls "life". Because of its analogies with the rise, fall and alternations of a society of living organisms, it belongs to a growing class of what are called "simulation games"games that resemble real-life processes. To play life you must have a fairly large checkerboard and a plentiful supply of flat counters of two colors. (Small checkers or poker chips do nicely.) An Oriental "go" board can be used if you can find flat counters that are small enough to fit within its cells. (Go stones are unusable because they are not flat.) It is possible to work with pencil and graph paper but it is much easier, particularly for beginners, to use counters and a board.

A large man with a wiry gray beard and a T-shirt printed with a design by M.C. Escher walks to the front of the hall: John Conway, John Von Neumann Professor in Applied and Computational Mathematics. With a brief quip about how he wasn't sure he'd have an audience, he begins to discuss the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes. The sole surviving record of Archimedes' work in the original Greek is a palimpsest, a papyrus document that was written on, erased, then turned and used again. Modern technology enables scholars to puzzle out the bottom layer of text underneath the later writing.

A: A fish." Subtract one from infinity. Now take the square root of that. Did you get 42? Surreal. It seems unlikely to use a word like this to describe a set of numbers. How unreal or hallucinatory have numbers ever seemed to you? Cantor built the infinite ordinal numbers and Dedekind constructed the real numbers from the rationals using "cuts". ( Dedekind's construction has similarities to the construction of surreal numbers.) The infinity of ordinal numbers is not too tricky for most people to understand. Dedekind cuts are fairly concrete, or at least understandable without too much difficulty. So where can we find these dreamlike, fantastical, surreal numbers? One might wonder how you can do calculations with infinity. Enter surreal numbers. John Conway created (or you might say discovered) this new construction of numbers, which include the real numbers plus much more. The purpose of this paper is to give the reader a general understanding of what surreal numbers are and their significance. Starting at the very beginning, a definition would probably be most appropriate. Unfortunately we can't call on Webster, so Donald Knuth will have to do the job instead.
