A most refined Neogothic miniature of the Madonna with Child in a landschape, surrounded by a rich border of flowers, insects and small animals on liquid gold. Signed Charles de Pape. Painted on paper, the verso blank. Size: 285 x 219 mm. Mounted and framed. In the gently arched compartment the Madonna is looking with reverence to the Child in her arms, who poses his head on his left arm. The mother and son seem to be in a state of total peace and devotion, a focussing point of any devout viewer. The charming landscape behind the figures, with curving footpaths, some figures and animals, hardly distracts the eye. The quiet countryside adds even further to this general feeling of serenity pervading the miniature. The full border is painted with liquid gold as a backdrop to the various meticulously rendered flowers and all kind of small animals: a robin, butterflies, a fly, a ladybird, a snail, etc. The border with realistic flowers betrays the inspiration by the "trompe l'oeil" borders from the famous Ghent-Bruges school (ca. 1490-1520). The inner corners of the frame form an architectural arch just above the head of the Madonna.
