Maloney, CSOM ‘94, gathered material for a Boston College student prayer book that was going to be sponsored by the Ignatian Society. He assembled classic Christian prayers, prayers from other religious traditions, insightful passages from a variety of spiritual writers, and original prayers composed by BC faculty members and administrators and students who were Brian's contemporaries. It was a time-consuming project and that book was never published, but many of his selections are now part of this book and we want to express thanks to Brian for originating this project.
When Fr. William P. Leahy, S.J., became president of Boston College in 1996, he initiated the discussions that led to this present book.

As this volume is composed (1) of the "Decrees and Canons" of the Councils, along with extracts from the proceedings of some of the principal ones, and (2) of Scholia that are given to explain and illustrate those other mam parts in the collection, an attempt is made to combine in the same set of indexes the references to these two parts, and at the same time to easily distinguish them to the eye by the character of the types that are used. This is thought to be simpler and more generally useful than either to have separate indexes for the text and Scholia, or to index all the references without distinction. The references that belong to the Decrees, Canons, and Extracts, are placed in heavy face type, while those that belong to the Scholia are in the usual lighter face type of the volume. Where the same figures in different type are found together, it means that a reference is made to some fact in the text on that page, and also to some comment in the Scholia upon the same page. (Kindly Mother of the Redeemer). The opening words of one of the four Antiphons sung at Compline and Lauds, in honour of the Blessed Virgin, at various seasons of the year. This particular Antiphon is assigned to that part of the year occurring between the first Vespers of the first Sunday in Advent and Compline of the 2nd of February (on which day it ceases, even if the Feast of the Purification should be transferred from that day). It consists of six hexameter verses in strict prosodial form, followed by versicle, response, and prayer, which vary for the season: until Christmas Eve (first Vespers of the Nativity), V. Angelus Domini... R. Et concepit... with the prayer Gratiam tuam...

Dedicated to Rev. Raymond Geyer, OSB This article is reprinted here with the kind permission of Kevin Knight, who has undertaken a project to transcribe an online version of the 1907 Catholic Encyclopedia. While this article is taken from a volume written well before the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, it is still relevant from an historical perspective, allowing us to study the sequence Veni Sancte Spiritus . Whitsunday is an older term for Pentecost, derived from the white robes worn by baptismal candidates. Baptisms, often held outside in rivers, were frequently postponed from the Easter Vigil to Pentecost due to the chilling weather of cold northern European climates. The sequence for Pentecost (the "Golden Sequence"). It is sung at Mass from Whitsunday until the following Saturday inclusively, and comprises ten stanzas of the form: Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
Et emitte coelitus
Lucis tuae radium.

What is a Latin Study Group?
A Latin study group is a group of people working collaboratively through a Latin text. A volunteer coordinator makes an assignment (usually Latin to English translation, although there is some English to Latin translation) and each participant sends his work to the coordinator. The coordinator then collates the assignments sentence-by-sentence and posts the collation. Each participant then studies the collation to check his work against the group consensus. There is no teacher. This is a collaboration of self-study students. There is no final authority to determine what is right and what is wrong. Experience has shown that a thoughtful study of the collations usually allows a participant to find his own errors. There are also experienced Latinists on the list who will answer questions, both before and after the collations are posted. There is no cost, other than purchasing the text. You will receive no academic credit of any kind for participating in this group.

The island is divided into three separate villages (Oberzell, Mittelzell, and Niederzell), each of which is centered on the remains of a medieval monastery. The most impressive of these is the , Burgstrasse (tel. Krautergarten (Herb Garden) , in the shadow of the cathedral on the Hermann Contractus Strasse. It emulates the herb and vegetable gardens maintained by monks in the Middle Ages. The hamlet of Niederzell is home to Stiftskirche St. Peter and St. Paul , Egino-Strasse (no phone). If it's not open when you arrive, the tourist office calls someone to unlock the gates for you. In 1990, during restorations of the church's apse, a series of Romanesque frescoes were uncovered and are now on view. The nearby hamlet of Oberzell houses Stiftskirche St. George , Seestrasse (no phone). Rising abruptly from a cabbage field, it has a severely dignified, very simple facade, and a series of charmingly naive medieval frescoes inside. It's open daily 9am to 6pm. Admission is free. A final site worth a stop is the Heimatmuseum
