Anyway, the point is that we just need to classify the factors: the process of sticking these together to get the other von Neumann algebras is not tricky. The first step in classifying factors was done by von Neumann and Murray , who divided them into types I, II, and III This doubles the trace, so define a new trace on the algebra of 2 x 2 matrices which is half the usual one. Now keep doing this, doubling the dimension each time, using the above formula to define a map from the 2^n x 2^n matrices into the 2^(n+1) x 2^(n+1) matrices, and normalizing the trace on each of these matrix algebras so that all the maps are trace-preserving. Directeur de recherche au CNRS de 1981 à 1984, il est depuis cette date titulaire de la chaire d’analyse et de géométrie du Collège de France. Tout au long de sa carrière, Alain Connes s’est intéressé aux problèmes soulevés par la physique quantique et la théorie de la relativité, qui ont fait apparaître des questions impossibles à résoudre par l’algèbre et la géométrie classiques, commutatives, où l’ordre des termes d’une opération est sans importance (A fois B est égal à B fois A). La géométrie classique était basée sur la notion de point à la position définie par les trois dimensions de l’espace. Dans la mécanique quantique, la notion de point a cédé sa place à la notion "d’états", qui correspond plutôt à un nuage de points, à l’image d’un électron autour du noyau d’un atome.
