Lynda Mugglestone, 'Talking proper' : the rise of accent as social symbol. Clarendon Press, Oxford 1995. £40 (now available in paperback, £14.99). By contrast, modern industrialised societies exhibit (in Sankoff’s analysis) an unmistakeable degree of vertical linguistic stratification. Such stratification may simply mirror political and economic stratification, and linguistic elements may - like dress or etiquette - become the arbitrary symbols of rankings in the social or economic hierarchy. But we need to note, pace Sankoff, that this is not the only form of stratification which is involved, despite the frequent attempts of sociolinguists to claim these ingredients as all-important. In ancient Rome and its dominions, linguistic stratification reflected the primacy of Greek language and culture, despite the political inferiority of the Greeks: what was crucial was respect for Greek culture, and not least its literature. For much of Japan's history, Japanese language and culture were in thrall to Chinese culture, despite the absence of political domination by China. Among crucial factors in modern industrialised societies, the demand for specialist knowledge and a high regard for literacy have both led to a respect for the forms of language in which modern specialist knowledge is most commonly expressed, which is overwhelmingly the standard variety (cf. Gellner 1983).

Biographical memoirs
Edward James Hannan 1921-1994 By J.M. Gani This memoir was originally published in Historical Records of Australian Science , vol.10, no.2, 1994. Introduction Ted Hannan died in Canberra after a sudden heart attack on the evening of 7 January 1994. He had been his usual ebullient self during the day, when he had gone to work among his colleagues in the Department of Statistics, The Faculties, at the Australian National University (ANU). On returning home, he told his wife Irene that he felt tired, and retired early. He called out to her at about 9.15 pm during his heart attack, and was promptly driven by ambulance to the Woden Valley Hospital. Despite the care he received, he died before midnight. His death has deprived Australia of one of its most distinguished statisticians, and the world of an eminent time series analyst. This tribute, which can hardly do justice to his life and work, is presented as a record of the achievements of a most unusual, talented and well-loved colleague and friend. We are fortunate to have access to Adrian Pagan's interview of Hannan for the journal Econometric Theory (1985), and to a personal article entitled 'Remembrance of things past' which Hannan published in

CCI Space Shuttle Coverage wins Emmy
May 17, 1999. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fl., May 17, 1999 - Communications Concepts, Inc. (CCI), an audio visual communications company, with headquarters in Cape Canaveral was part of the team that was honored with an Emmy Award at the 35th Annual Midwestern Regional Emmy Awards. The Award was given to recognize the outstanding team effort involved in covering an event that does not happen everyday and effects a large segment of the community. The Emmy was given to CCI's client, WBNS - Ohio News Network, for coverage of STS-95 John Glenn Launch at an awards gala at The Museum Center at Cincinnati's Union Terminal. In his award acceptance speech, David Sirak, News Operations Manager for WBNS, thanked the entire team of over 170 talented people for their contributions and specifically thanked the crew of Communications Concepts "without them this wouldn't have happened." Communications Concepts produced live coverage of the Glenn Launch for WBNS providing crews, staging, set, a multi-camera production truck, microwave truck and satellite uplink truck. Coverage from Kennedy Space Center started weeks before the launch with Space Shuttle Rollout and Astronaut arrival. Launch week coverage included live reports for morning, mid-day, prime and late newscasts. To accomplish this, CCI provided two sixteen-person crews that allowed WBNS to shoot and edit from 4:00 AM until 1:00 AM daily. KSC coverage by CCI included not only reports from the Shuttle Press Site, but also from Astronauts Hall of Fame - Space Camp. Coverage by CCI concluded with the Space Shuttle landing at KSC. This was the second time CCI Shuttle Launch coverage had been nominated for an Emmy. CCI had been previously nominated for its work for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

BURGER KING PREDICTS WHOPPING JAPAN BIZ
Also attending the luncheon briefing were Burger King Japan Co., Ltd., President Yuji Kagohashi, Senior Vice President David Fitzjohn and Directors Gus Gelardi and Tetsuji Kanamori. Burger King Japan is a 50-50 joint venture set up by Japan Tobacco Inc. and Grand Metropolitan PLC, and is currently undergoing a rapid growth in Japan as more than 100 Morinaga Love hamburger restaurants are being converted to Burger King establishments.
Recently converted Tokyo outlets include those in Minato-ku, Ikebukuro, Harajuku, Shiba, Ochanomizu, Isezaki-cho in Yokohama, Nakano, Yotsugi, Shibaura Kodaimae, Gakugeidaigaku and Kita Senju.
Lowes, asked about the wisdom of entering the Japanese market at such a late date compared with competitors such as McDonald's and Wendy's, said he has complete confidence that Burger King's taste will soon become a big favorite of Japanese burger lovers, and his company would be Japan's most preferred hamburger chain, a status it enjoys in America.
Pointing out that many Burger King restaurants in North America are located adjacent to a McDonald's and/or a Wendy's, Lowes said, "I can go right in and open a store next to the others and know I'm going to do a good a business without fear of saturation."
