About us May 2005 Form is temporary … April 27, 2005 Or is it? But what exactly is form? How do you acquire it? And how do you keep it? Edward Craig investigates When the Australian opener Matthew Hayden was in the middle of his three-year run glut, some questioned whether he was a talented individual on an extended run of supreme form or an all-time great. There is something about his batting, his style, his history and past record that nudges towards the former. He does not appear to have the innate ball-striking ability of Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar or his own captain Ricky Ponting. He scores runs through hard work, hard hitting and a tough personality. But his statistics are up there with the best. So what is the truth? Hayden's last 22 innings have yielded 662 runs at 33.10. Perhaps the sceptics were right. If it was "good form", what exactly is that? A simple definition might be "the fitness of an athlete, at a particular time, to perform". Good form and bad form come and go, measurable in the mind but also in the record books. As far as the spectator is concerned, batsmen perform one day or one season, then not the next. Bowlers take wickets galore for three successive games, then are off target on the fourth. Great players are more consistent but even they suffer troughs between their peaks.

The Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805) Click here to return to Home Page Click here for animation of the Battle (courtesy of the National Maritime Museum) The background to the action The build up to the Battle of Trafalgar began more than two years previously. On 16 May 1803 the experimental peace of the Treaty of Amiens failed, and England again declared war on France. The avowed intent of the French was to invade Britain - and they would do this by gaining control of the Channel for long enough to allow an invasion force to cross the Channel. Napoleon had claimed that "England alone could not venture upon a struggle with France", but indeed by 1805 England was standing alone against the combined might of both France and Spain. He called the English Channel - "the ditch which will be crossed when anyone has the audacity to attempt it." During 1803 and 1804 both sides jockeyed for position. The strategy of the British was to blockade the French fleet - principally in the ports of Brest and Toulon and in the Texel and Rochefort.

John Pollard "The avenger of Nelson" Click here to return to Home Page Summary information from "The Men who fought with Nelson in HMS Victory"
Pollard served another sixty years, albeit some on half pay, before he finally retired as a Commander. He married in 1822 and fathered six children. He died in 1868 aged 81. A detailed examination by D Bonner Smith, published in the Mariner's Mirror In the Naval Chronicle, for December 1805 , there is an extract from " the Supplement to the Gibraltar Chronicle for Saturday, November 2, 1805", giving details of the death of Nelson and stating: "The Frenchman by whose hand this matchless Hero fell, was soon afterwards shot by Mr Pollard, Midshipman of the Victory, and was seen to fall out of the mizen-top." In his Authentic Narrative of the Death of Lord Nelson (pp. 58-9), [Sir] William Beatty wrote:
There were only two Frenchmen left alive in the mizen-top of the Redoutable at the time of his Lordship's being wounded, and by the hands of one of these he fell. These men continued firing at Captains Hardy and Adair, Lieutenant Rotely of the Marines, and some of the Midshipmen on the Victory's poop, for some time afterwards. At length one of them was killed by a musket ball; and on the other's then attempting to make his escape from the top down the rigging, Mr Pollard (Midshipman) fired his musket at him, and shot him in the back; when he fell dead from the shrouds, on the Redoutable's poop.
This giving the sole credit to Pollard must have been queried quite early, and certainly before 18 13, the year in which Southey's

O n November 15, 1955, legendary television personality Ed Sullivan convened a meeting of fifty of the most prominent television industry leaders all concerned about the future of the television medium which had only recently captured the imagination and loyalty of the American public.
With leaders such as Walter Cronkite, Fred Allen, Charles Collingwood , Edward R. Murrow, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, Mark Goodson and Basil Rathbone among them, the organization doubled within two weeks to become the "Committee of 100." This high level group was committed to the establishment of a National Television Academy.
Since those early heady days, NATAS has been a story of extraordinary growth in numbers of members and chapters, plus the phenomenal scope and breadth of programs and services. Membership has flourished to more than 11,000, making NATAS the single largest television professional association in the world. NATAS is represented by 17 chapters nationwide serving 97 percent of the viewing public.
Aspire has won 7 Emmys.

(Classmark prefix M)
This collection, arranged in subject order by UDC classification, houses miscellaneous accessions received up to 1995 of early and rare scientific works, 16th-20th century. It contains c.1000 volumes (600 titles), predominantly 18th and 19th century publications, but with some earlier, both English and foreign, and a few 20th century items. In subject matter it is strongest in mathematics and astronomy, but geology, botany, zoology and chemistry are also represented. It includes the early books and periodicals from the University Observatory's library , gifts of Miss Alice Edleston from the collection of Rev. Joseph Edleston (d.1895), and the early books, largely mathematical and astronomical, from the bequest of Sir Edward Collingwood received in 1970 (later books from this bequest and Sir Edward's papers are in the care of the University's Department of Mathematics; modern periodicals are also there or in the general stock of the University Library). Sir Isaac Newton and William Emerson are the two authors most amply present, besides the astronomer, architect and landscape gardener, Thomas Wright of Byers Green, Co Durham (1711-86), of whose manuscripts and publications the Library holds possibly the most extensive collection.

Charles Collingwood Plays Brian Aldridge He attended the same school (Sherborne) and shares his ability to charm, but Charles Collingwood otherwise insists that he has nothing in common with Brian Aldridge. The main difference being that whilst Brian goes home to the long-suffering Jennifer, Charles shares his life with actress Judy Bennett , who plays Shula. It would be interesting to know if there is any other married couple who have shared both a marriage and a programme for over 25 years. If so, Charles would like to meet them.
