Educated at Cheltenham and The Oratory School, Edgbaston, (a Catholic school now at Woodcote, Reading) he won a prize cadetship for the RMC Sandhurst but decided to enter Woolwich instead. From there he obtained his probationary commission in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in September 1913. Attached to the second Battalion when war broke out, he went with them to France on 11th August 1914 where he was gazetted to the Regular Army on 1st September 1914. Collingwood-Thompson was taken to 12th Field Ambulance in Perreuse Chateau where he died at 4am the following day. Excerpts from Douglas R. Nickel, Dreaming in Pictures: The Photography of Lewis Carroll. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art/Yale University Press, 2002
(© 2002 The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. All rights reserved. Not to be used without permission.) introduction the butterfly collector some other occupation a tangled tale ... a ride on a lion Introduction
The philosopher Thomas S. Kuhn popularized the concept of "paradigm shift" in the early sixties, to describe how research scientists operate out of a shared body of assumptions and beliefs about their subject—that is, until an innovative, revolutionary approach is introduced that challenges those assumptions and creates a new paradigm for research, with a new set of questions. The field of Lewis Carroll Studies seems to be at this moment in the midst of just such a paradigm shift, the evidence for which can be discovered on this website. With the publication of her book In the Shadow of the Dreamchild: A New Understanding of Lewis Carroll (Peter Owen, 1999), Karoline Leach almost singlehandedly swept away 100 years of misguided speculation about the biographical conditions for Carroll's literary genius, and replaced it with a new, more historical and rational set of premises upon which new studies could be founded.

Publication of new genetic approach to possible obesity drug development
Fat gene identified using Sangamo’s zinc finger proteins (ZFPs). Media teleconference scheduled to discuss publication of new genetic approach to possible obesity drug development by Pfizer, Sangamo scientists The precise elucidation of the function of this gene isoform, called PPARgamma2, provides a highly specific molecular target for potential new drug development in obesity and other serious conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The rapidly advancing field of gene-based drug development requires precise targeting and specificity because of the incredible complexity and interdependence of gene expression in human biology. For example, PPARgamma2 expression occurs in adipocytes (fat cells) but has not been found in other cell types. In contrast, the PPARgamma1 isoform is expressed in numerous cell types including macrophages, where it is important in a pathway that has anti-atherosclerotic effects. PANEL: Edward Lanphier, President and CEO, Sangamo Biosciences; Carl Pabo, Ph.D. Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer. Prior to his recent appointment to Sangamo, Dr. Pabo served as Professor of Biophysics and Structural Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
