Destined to go down in Canadian film history as the surprise movie of 2001, and one of the best ever made in this country, Atanarjuat is bold and emotionally generous. Full of surprises, it never limits itself by locking into one mode and never plays like one of those deadening films about Aboriginal people that stereotypes them as either nature gurus, martyrs or booze-addled, gas-sniffing losers. The Inuit don't need that kind of depersonalization, either from well-intentioned whites or officially sanctioned Aboriginal media makers.

PLASMA TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS DIVISION
The Plasma Technology and Systems Division, headed by Dr. Daniel R. Cohn, investigates plasma processing for environmental and industrial applications; develops new diagnostic technology for environmental and fusion applications; and investigates advanced fusion reactor systems designs and magnet concepts. Current research areas include arc plasma treatment of solid waste (Daniel R. Cohn, Paul P. Woskov, Charles H. Titus, and Jeffrey E. Surma); process diagnostic development (Paul P. Woskov and Daniel R. Cohn); cold plasma processing of gaseous waste (Daniel R. Cohn and Leslie Bromberg); plasma manufacturing of hydrogen (Daniel R. Cohn and Leslie Bromberg); millimeter wave and infrared diagnostic development (Paul P. Woskov); system studies (Leslie Bromberg); high temperature superconducting magnet development (Leslie Bromberg); and fusion safety and environmental studies (Mujid S. Kazimi). Some highlights of our research in the past year are listed below.
Arc Plasma Furnace Treatment Of Solid Waste
A pilot-scale arc plasma research furnace to study treatment of simulated solid waste has been operated with continuous feed. Power levels in the 250 kW range were used with a material feed rate of 200 pounds per hour. Soil characteristic of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) has been converted into a stable glass. The furnace has also been used for extensive testing of process diagnostics. Future objectives include studies of vitrification of a range of simulated wastes; development of predictive models and their applications to control systems (with Prof. Julian Szekely of the Materials Science and Engineering Department); and component testing.

FOREWORD
n December 1993, U.S. Secretary of Energy Hazel R. O'Leary announced her Openness Initiative. As part of this initiative, the Department of Energy undertook an effort to identify and catalog historical documents on radiation experiments that had used human subjects. The Office of Human Radiation Experiments coordinated the Department's search for records about these experiments. An enormous volume of historical records has been located. Many of these records were disorganized; often poorly cataloged, if at all; and scattered across the country in holding areas, archives, and records centers. The Department has produced a roadmap to the large universe of pertinent information: Human Radiation Experiments: The Department of Energy Roadmap to the Story and the Records

Paul Mills (a.k.a. Curly Boy Stubbs): "On March 12, 1992, at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax, N.S., about 1200 people had gathered for what had become an annual event... the Stan Rogers concert. Stan was a big star in Halifax and had no trouble filling this concert hall to capacity. The people here had come to accept him as one of their own. The six-foot-four kid from Hamilton, Ontario, with solid family ties to Nova Scotia and the uncanny ability to capture Maritime life perfectly in the space of a four minute song had long since won their hearts. Erik Perth , the director of the Dalhousie Arts Centre (the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium ) back then, had become a close friend of Stan's in the six years since he had first created this annual event. His recollections of Stan are vivid:

    by Vince Darcangelo

When The Weekerlys take the stage on Thursday, Aug. 25, it will be a sonic victory of Behind the Music proportions. Just a few months ago, when group co-founder Rick Fox unexpectedly left the band, the Weekerly Brothers' career seemed about as over as Andy Richter's. After some soul searching, and a grand recruiting effort, remaining Weekerly Boy Stewart Sallo reformed the group with a few added twists: new members Liza Oxnard, bassist Eyal Rivlin and accordionist David Grimsland. "There was never any doubt about carrying on with the group," says Sallo. "The only question was how to go about doing that and how to replace Rick." A solo acoustic set by Liza at last year's B-dub anniversary party eventually led to an offer to replace Fox, who had been a cornerstone of the band's sound. "Stewart asked me to do this show, and it sounded like fun," says Liza. "They're all nice guys, and we're playing some fun, kitschy covers. We're going to get goofy and have fun with it." While many musicians find it difficult to fill the shoes of an original member, her band mates say Liza has not only filled the open spot in the lineup but has brought her unique style to the group.

Research Interest: Communication between the Immune System and Epithelium in Chronic Inflammatory Intestinal Diseases.
Dr. Cohn's research is centered on understanding communication between the immune system and the epithelium in inflammatory bowel disease and other chronic inflammatory diseases of the intestine. A major focus of his research is on understanding how cytokines, growth factors, and other inflammatory mediators regulate the fate of epithelial stem cells and their descendents in the intestine following injury. These studies may have a great impact on the development of new therapeutic approaches to enhance restoration of the mucosal barrier in diseases such as Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis. Another area of investigation for Dr. Cohn is understanding how prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators effect the development of cancer in the intestine. When injured by carcinogens in the food we eat, epithelial stem cells may either undergo apoptosis or attempt to repair the damage that these compounds cause. Evidence is emerging that prostaglandins and inflammatory cytokines may regulate which pathway a stem cell takes after carcinogen exposure. The objective of this area of research is to develop new chemopreventive agents for reducing the incidence of colorectal cancer by shifting the balance between apoptosis and cellular repair pathways in the epithelial stem cell population.

So much for the Aryans of Adolf Hitler. but who are those Jeanpaul Sartre ? Willy Israel cohn, Als Jude in Breslau 1941 (1975)
    http://www.wernercohn.com/Aryans.html
The "Aryans" of Jean-Paul Sartre Totalitarian Categories in Western Writing By Werner Cohn From Encounter , vol. LVII, no. 6, December 1981, pp. 86-91. The present version is shortened and contains a few minor stylistic changes. "The purpose of NEWSPEAK was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of INGSOC, but to make all other modes of thought impossible ...." George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) But not all those who fall into similar traps have lived under Communism or Nazism. Totalitarian categories and modes of thinking have insinuated themselves into Western writing since the beginnings of totalitarian rule. One important mechanism by which this has been achieved is ambiguity of viewpoint. A literary style variously labeled style indirect libre or Free Indirect Speech, but which I will here call free indirect citation , has generally been the carrier of this ambiguity (1). Using neither direct nor indirect quotation, it consists of an equivocal attribution of thought or vocabulary to a named or unnamed other. In the example of my Hungarian friend, "socialist" may be interpreted to stand for "what the Communists call 'socialist'". But it could also be read as "what I, the writer, call socialist." Hence the ambiguity. The inherent equivocation of free indirect citation can be a very effective device in fiction, but when used in scholarly or interpretive essays it leads to intellectual chaos. I shall try to show how this chaos has helped the cause of totalitarian movements in the West.
