WHY BE JEWISH?

A Sermon for Rosh HaShanah Day 5765
September 16, 2004 CAN WE MAKE IT BETTER? ... September 25, 2004 HIGH HOLY DAYS PULPIT THEME FOR 5765 Why Questions? "That's an easy one", says Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn. "The posing of questions has ever been at the heart of our Judaism. Our youngest child is honored to ask the four questions at the seder table each year. Our rabbinic literature is fashioned around the question and anwer format. Moreover, not on ly the Talmud but also the Bible itself poses penetrating and heart-stopping questions to which you and I and every living soul ought to be busy attempting to respond. The High Holy Days are the perfect occasion to ask ourselves some weighty and necessary questions." "Let's say that I will offer some possible responses and will encourage each 'Jew in the Pew' to continue the process of formulating his or her own personal reply. I use the phrase "In Search of An Answer" because the questions themselves are eternal," Rabbi Cohn continued. "No one has ever accused me of being wishy-washy. I'll try to do my very best to forcefully and candidly offer my own conclusions tothe fullest extent of my thinking, but I will then invite our congregants to continue the dialogue in the context of their own lives long after these sermons have been delivered. That's what a real sermon ought to do, anyway. And besides, in a world where people typically hunger for the simplistic answer, the Jew has always placed greater emphasis and value upon the incisive and thought provoking question. In total, this series could amount to a Jewish makeover, and eager and welcoming invitation to us all to become the Jew that is in you!"

Duke University's Erwin Chemerinsky takes his turn today. He argues that Democrats should oppose Roberts because having Roberts on the bench would likely change the law. Under that approach, constitutional law would never change unless Congress incorrectly guessed the views of nominees. Our "living Constitution" itself would be in jeopardy. Chemerinsky argues that precedent exists for opposing Supreme Court nominees who are likely to dramatically change the law. He is correct to cite the Bork case in this regard (his other examples, such as Clarence Thomas, don't hold up as well). But he ignores the fact that, at least in modern history, Republicans have never opposed a liberal Supreme Court nominee on the grounds that confirmation would likely change the law. For example, Ginsburg collected all but three Republicans votes even though there could be little doubt that her elevation to replace centrist Byron White would move the Court in a liberal direction, as it has. A world in which the opposition party opposes Supreme Court nominees who are likely to move the Court in the direction the president desires is not ideal because it would tend to insulate the Court from change, thus increasing its anti-democratic tendencies. However, I can live in such a world, as long as both parties play by the same rules. Chemerinsky might look at a political map of America and consider whether, given the Republican party's natural majority in the Senate, he wants to live in that world.

Lara, along with her refugee parents, finds herself marooned in an isolated little hotel in snowbound Norway before World War II. Left all alone, she finds two eccentric old English guests who teach her to ski. A warm, luminous story about the real meaning of Christmas—from the author of The Beejum Book.

Living Alphabet
Famke Zonneveld
Here is a delightful picture-alphabet game book for young children! Each consonant and vowel comes to life with its own unique qualities in the world: a cat naps on a carpet conjuring cows and conch shells, clocks and crows, cubes, and columns. A girl gives grain to geese in a gated garden, watched over by giraffes and grasshoppers, gondolas, and grapes, gourds and a geodesic globe. Mermaids muse in the moonlight under mountains surrounded by monkeys and moose, minarets and mice, mosquitoes and a menorah.
The vibrant and playful illustrations (by the illustrator of What Julianna Could See ) help children learn the alphabet in the most natural and living way.

SUSAN COHN: 'A Cohnceptual Play'
6 - 11 September
Since early 1980 Susan Cohn has been designing and making jewellery and objects for exhibition, multiple edition production and private commission. Her references are to other objects and processes of technological culture. Working with local 21st century materials, mostly aluminium, and using contemporary vernacular forms and techniques of making, she ceaselessly experiments with material, form and colour. In 1984 Cohn became sole director of Workshop 3000, a gold and silversmithing workshop located in Melbourne, Australia. She exhibits worldwide, has been inducted into the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame and has two products, 'Cohncave' and 'Cohndom Box' currently in production with Alessi, the Italian design company. She has conducted a range of master classes in design, including at the Royal College of Art, London, with Dr Alberto Alessi at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and at the Glass Workshop, Australian National University, Canberra.

''Flyaway Bracelets'

Coming from a non-glass background, Cohn will challenge participants to step out of the predictable and re-look at the potential of glass. An object for the table will be the conceptual theme for exploring ideas centred on design limitations, mass production requirements, one-off versus the multiple object and current design interests. Collaborative discussion, model making, glass sampling and individual concepts will be used to investigate the constraints of material, form and production. Cohn will bring her extensive experience of working with manufacturing companies such as Alessi, to the class. Participants are asked to bring examples of their work and a favourite music CD.

There are many small tricks to shorten calculations, or to check the results of calculations - such as estimating, rounding, and divisibility tests
As a mathematician, I am inclined to choose a mathematical idea, but most mathematical ideas require so much specialist knowledge as to be unsuitable. Even to explain a central idea from scratch would require so much detail, as to overwhelm the layperson. Moreover, mathematics is hated and feared by most non-mathematicians. But this points to a possible topic. Numbers are at the base of much mathematics, but they also play an important role in everyday life. There are many small tricks to shorten calculations, or to check the results of calculations. I have in mind ideas such as estimating, rounding, and divisibility tests, which can be a great help in performing and checking approximate calculations.
