Paul Cohen
For the past six years Paul Cohen, 40, has been living at Tlholego with his wife Stephne and their son David. Cohen said his family upbringing encouraged him to appreciate life as a precious gift, and to develop a deep desire to ensure that life is sustained and built into the roots of the future. Cohen says he loves the African land and the songs of its people, which "warm the heart and soul." He realizes that, "in the long term, as a white minority living in South Africa, my survival and that of my children depends on the flourishing of the black majority, and I believe that ecological development is a foundation, or root, to that flourishing." " . . . in South Africa, we have . . . many people doing excellent work, applying permaculture and similar technologies to their local situations . . . " Cohen became excited about the idea of community-based factories while studying for his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Cape Town. In 1986, two years after graduating, he began to study the ecological design sciences and embarked on a series of educational tours and periods of residence in the United States, Australia and Europe. He studied systems dynamics, focusing on its practical application in restoring whole ecosystems and building sustainable communities Cohen served as an apprentice in earth architecture with world renown architects, including Nader Khalili of the California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture, and Brian Woodward, a leader in low-cost, owner-built housing at the Earthways Sustainable Lifestyles Institute in Australia. Cohen and Woodward have conducted training sessions in "experiential learning" by building. In earlier work in Australia, Woodward conceived the design of the building system that Paul is now expanding and adapting to situations that pose different ecological challenges across South Africa.

Cohen, Paul Joseph
Born: April 2, 1934, Long Branch, N.J., U.S. American mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1966 for his proof of the independence of the continuum hypothesis from the other axioms of set theory. Cohen attended the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954; Ph.D., 1958). He held appointments at the University of Rochester, N.Y. (1957-58), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1958-59) before joining the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J. (1959-61). In 1961 he moved to Stanford University in California. Cohen was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow in 1966. Cohen solved a problem (first on David Hilbert's influential 1900 list of important unsolved problems) concerning the truth of the continuum hypothesis. Georg Cantor's continuum hypothesis states that there is no cardinal number between and 2 . In 1940 Kurt Gšdel had shown that, if one accepts the Zermelo-Fraenkel system of axioms for set theory, then the continuum hypothesis is not disprovable. Cohen, in 1963, showed that it is not provable under these hypotheses and hence is independent of the other axioms. To do this he introduced a new technique known as forcing, a technique that has since had significant applications throughout set theory. The question still remains whether, with some axiom system for set theory, the continuum hypothesis is true. Alonzo Church, in his comments to the Congress in Moscow, suggested that the "Gšdel-Cohen results and subsequent extensions of them have the consequence that there is not one set theory but many, with the difference arising in connection with a problem which intuition still seems to tell us must ?really' have only one true solution." After proving his startling result about the continuum hypothesis, Cohen returned to research in analysis.

Thought Leaders Forum: Paul M. Cohen on Peter F. Drucker
Peter Drucker creates real problems for business editors. Say you're plowing through some authors' ponderous manuscript when finally the point becomes clear: Ah, "build on your strengths." Or "understand what the customer values," or "place people where they can make their greatest contribution," or "abandon the fading star." "He is an uncommonly gracious and generous man. He also is remarkable for his clarity, economy, and elegance of thought. Along with modern management, Peter fathered management writing. Few who have followed are in his league, but all of us are in his debt." The problem is this: Do you say, "As Peter Drucker wrote 30 years ago ?" making the writers look unoriginal? Or do you simply borrow Drucker's insight, making the authors look good (which is your job)? I admit to having done both. I think Peter would understand. He is an uncommonly gracious and generous man. He also is remarkable for his clarity, economy, and elegance of thought. Along with modern management, Peter fathered management writing. Few who have followed are in his league, but all of us are in his debt.

"Especially eloquent" (New Yorker Magazine), "Radiant" (Boston Globe) and "Virtuosic" (Strad Magazine) are but a few of the superlatives which have been used by critics internationally to applaud the artistry of cellist Paul Cohen. Since making his concerto debut at the age of twelve in his native Minneapolis, he has appeared regularly with orchestras throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic. A recital debut at the Philips Collection in Washington D.C., acclaimed performances of the complete cycles of the Beethoven Cello Sonatas and Bach Cello Suites in single formats, and chamber music appearances with the likes of Dawn Upshaw, David Soyer, and Marcus Thompson, round out a career which has been both diverse and adventurous. Since moving to Los Angeles in 1996 Mr. Cohen has expanded his musical activities to include recording for motion pictures and has participated in Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning film scores by John Williams, Michael Nyman, and James Horner.
A dedicated and inspiring teacher, Mr. Cohen has lead a class of cellists at Amherst College, been guest artist at the Aspen Music Festival and served as Artist-in-Residence at Emory University, Keene College, and the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music. Honors have come in the form of a Fischoff chamber Music Prize, the prestigious C.D. Jackson Master Award at the Tanglewood Festival, and a 1996 Individual Artist Fellowhip by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. Mr. Cohen is a recording artist for Centaur Records.
