General:
The 161st Indiana Volunteer Infantry became part of Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee's Seventh Army Corps, and spent the period of the Spanish American War at Camp Cuba Libre in Jacksonville, Florida. Later, the unit became part of the occupation forces in Cuba. As with all military units, it depended on its band for entertainment and to ease the homesickness that many of the men felt being far away from home for the first time. This is the story of the 161st Volunteer Infantry Regimental Band.
Band History:
"Shortly after the formation of the regiment at Camp Mount, the proper steps were taken preparatory to the regimental musical organization. A careful search through the different companies brought forth several fair musicians and they at once secured instruments, some owning their own, and some using instruments rented by the officers from dealers in the city; during the remainder of the month of July an d up to August 12 the boys lent their efforts toward furnishing band music for the regiment and visitors. Upon leaving Indianapolis for Jacksonville, the rented instruments were returned, and those who owned them shipped theirs home. After Mr. Beck, of Columbus, Indiana, after several other conclusions, concluded that the sand of Florida would certainly destroy his already failing eyesight, Mr. Antonio Montani, of Indianapolis, was appointed chief musician (band master) and Mr. H. M. Lord, of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, as one of the principal musicians."

Mark Cocker, The Guardian Edward Said pointed out that in writing about the Arab world, authors always have an agenda. Perhaps Irwin has replaced a Romantic illusion about the Alhambra with one more attractive to the New Age. Irwin is, however, modest about the possibility of ever knowing what the Alhambra was for. And his agenda seems to be nothing more sinister than to get us to look once more and to marvel once again at something we only thought we knew.

The write stuff
Philip Steer
Newlands College
An interest of mine is the art of calligraphy - beautiful writing - and what fascinates me is the simplicity of the materials involved: pen, paper and ink. I decided to see if I could make my own calligraphy inks, based on existing recipes, and test them so that I could hopefully find an ink that I could use for my own calligraphy. To test the inks, I divided the tests into two groups: scientific and consumer, because I felt it was essential to recognise that while some of the qualities of the inks could be quantified scientifically, ink is also an artistic medium, and should be tested for its performance as such. It would also be interesting to see if the two different series of tests would come to the same conclusion. I carried out scientific tests to assess the following characteristics of the ink, which I decided with the advice of another calligrapher: capillary action, acidity, bleeding, light density, fading, chromatography, and speed of drying. The consumer test took the form of writing a similar passage with each of the inks, scoring its performance under the following criteria - colour density, blackness of colour, fluidity, thinness of lines and letter crispness - and finding the best ink by the highest total score. The scientific and consumer tests both came to the same conclusion - that the ink recipe called `Edward Cocker's recipe' performed the best. The other main result was that the substitution of pyrogallic acid for the gallic acid specified in the recipe did not adversely affect the performance of the ink. The most surprising thing I found was that the pH of all the inks was extremely acidic - all were in a range between 2.4 and 3.8.

JAMES EDWARD CLARK Greenwood, Delaware Working Group Anne Rogers Clark is truly one of the premier people in dogs, and that is well-reflected in her unique standing in the history of The Westminster Kennel Club. When she steps into the ring this February to judge the Working Group, she will become the only person ever to have judged Best In Show (1978) and all seven Groups at the world's greatest dog show. In fact, in 2004, she will be attending her 64th consecutive Westminster, a streak dating back to 1941. That time span includes her years as a professional handler (1950 to 1965) and as part of the judging panel on 21 occasions. In fact, in 2004 she will tie Melbourne Downing with 22 judging appearances at Westminster through the years. But those are only a few of her accomplishments at Westminster. She was the first woman professional handler to win Best In Show here (1956), and then repeated that feat twice (1959 and 1961). In 2002, a Miniature Poodle, Ch. Surrey Spice Girl, co-bred by her, captured Best In Show honors.
