Obituary Bill Cochran
WILLIAM COCHRAN
July 30, 1922 - August 28, 2003
Bill Cochran was born on a remote sheep farm, some 15 miles south of Glasgow. Forebears of the Cochran family had farmed in the area continuously since the middle of the seventeenth century although Bill's father took the family to a new farm, some eight miles west of Edinburgh in 1928. As Bill himself said "It is surprising, particularly as I have no brothers, that I did not become a farmer." Had he done so it would have been a sad loss to science. In 1946 Bill moved to Cambridge as Research Asisstent to the Cavendish Professor, Sir Lawrence Bragg. The research group was under the direction of W H Taylor and also contained June Broomhead and C J B Clews. Professor Alexander Todd of the Chemistry Department had suggested to Bragg the problems of solving the structures of pyrimidines, purines, nucleosides and nucleotides as a way of throwing light on the structure of DNA. Cochran and Broomhead found that they could determine the electronic structures of pyrimidines and purines sufficiently accurately to find the positions of hydrogen atoms and Bill found that this was greatly improved by the use of an (F o - F c ) Fourier synthesis that removed the effect of termination errors. Later he built a Geiger-counter diffractometer with which he measured the electron density in salicylic acid to reveal the presence of hydrogen atoms and electron density associated with covalent bonding.

William Cochran
Physicist whose research into DNA and crystals offered fresh insights
IN THE 1950s and 1960s the physicist William Cochran did pioneering work on many of the problems that underpinned Nobel prizes won by others, including the structure of DNA. He also worked on so-called 'direct methods'; for determining the arrangement of atoms in crystal structures and on the interpretation of the way atoms vibrate in solids. He was responsible for advances in the theoretical understanding of the way crystalline solids transform from one structure to another at structural phase transitions. Bill Cochran was born in 1922 and educated at Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh before going to Edinburgh University to read physics. After graduating in 1943 he decided that his postgraduate studies would be best pursued in the chemistry department. There he worked with Arnold Beevers on the crystal structures of organic compounds, as well as fulfilling his wartime obligations as an air-raid warden. He left Edinburgh in 1948 to go to Cambridge, where he held a succession of posts until 1964. During this period he did much of the research work for which he is now known. His skills in determining the complex crystal structures of organic molecules led Francis Crick to seek his help in understanding the diffraction patterns of DNA, and his elegant explanation of the scattering from a helix was a crucial step in enabling Crick and Watson to determine the structure of DNA.

William Gemmell Cochran Born: 15 July 1909 in Rutherglen, Scotland Died: 29 March 1980 in Orleans, Massachusetts, USA William Cochran took the University of Glasgow Bursary Competition in 1927 and he was placed first. The award of a bursary allowed him to take his first degree at Glasgow and he was awarded an MA in mathematics and physics in 1931. He won the Logan Medal for the best student in the Faculty of Arts and won a scholarship to study mathematics at Cambridge. At Cambridge he took John Wishart's course in mathematical statistics, then proceed to take a practical course in the School of Agriculture. In 1934 R A Fisher left Rothamsted Experimental Station to accept the Galton chair at University College, London and Frank Yates became head at Rothamsted. Cochran was offered the vacant post but he was still not finished his doctoral course at Cambridge. Yates later wrote:- ... it was a measure of good sense that he accepted my argument that a PhD, even from Cambridge, was little evidence of research ability, and that Cambridge had at that time little to teach him in statistics that could not be much better learnt from practical work in a research institute. Cochran accepted the post at Rothamsted where he worked for 5 years on experimental designs and sample survey techniques. During this time he worked closely with Yates. At this time he also had the chance to work with
