The castle was founded by Earl William Fitz Osbern in the period between his being made earl of Hereford soon after Christmas 1066 and his death at the battle of Cassel in Flanders on 22 February 1071. In that time it is likely that his engineers found the natural knoll lying alongside the steep drop to the River Wye near a ford. This gave the site its later name, the cliff by the ford or Clifford. Fitz Osbern's men scarped and ditched the knoll they found into what is today a motte with a secondary platform to the West. The land of Clifford was at that time waste, but under the earls of Hereford and their successors this waste was brought to blossom with castle, borough and church. After Earl William's death, his son, Earl Below: the ruins of the twin-towered gatehouse at Clifford Castle.

William Clifford showed great promise at school where he won prizes in many different subjects. At age 15 he was sent to King's College, London where he excelled in mathematics and also in classics, English literature and (perhaps unexpectedly) in gymnastics. When he was 18 years old William entered Trinity College, Cambridge. He won not only prizes for mathematics but also a prize for a speech he delivered on Sir Walter Raleigh. He was second wrangler in his final examinations (in common with many other famous mathematicians who were second at Cambridge like Thomson and Maxwell ). He was elected to a Fellowship at Trinity in 1868. In 1870 he was part of an expedition to Italy to obtain scientific data from an eclipse. He had the unfortunate experience of being shipwrecked near Sicily, but he was fortunate to survive. In 1871 Clifford was appointed to the chair of Mathematics and Mechanics at University College London. In 1874 he was elected a Fellow of the

Preface People have long been interested in the circumstances under which it is appropriate to believe. Often, the source of this interest is the desire to believe something for which one has insufficient evidence. Extensive excerpts of the following essays by William Kingdon Clifford and William James are often reprinted in anthologies. This is sufficient proof of the enduring interest in this subject, and of the importance of these particular essays. But since they are excerpts Lectures and Essays one of his three part
It is to be hoped that the present volume will be useful to anyone interested in the question of whether it is appropriate to have faith

He invented the Clifford algebras of which octonions and biquaternions are special cases. He published his ideas in On the Space-Theory of Matter (1870), as well as the book of children's tales The Little People, but died at the peak of his creativity.

William K. Clifford was an English mathematician and philosopher who did not end up writing much, but nevertheless became famous for his argument that beliefs are not simply private acts. Clifford, William Kingdon
English mathematician and scientific philosopher who developed the theory of biquaternions and made advances in non-Euclidean geometry. Clifford parallels and Clifford surfaces are named after him.
Clifford was born in Exeter, Devon, and educated at Cambridge, where he spent his academic career until 1871, when he was appointed professor of applied mathematics at University College, London. From 1876 he lived in the Mediterranean region.
It was through a generalization of the quaternions (themselves a generalization of complex numbers) that Clifford derived his theory of biquaternions, associating them specifically with linear algebra. In this way representing motions in three-dimensional non-Euclidean space, and together with his suggestion in 1870 that matter itself was a kind of curvature of space, Clifford may be seen to have foreshadowed in some respects Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity.
