General Description Course work in philosophy is planned to acquaint the student with the historical and systematic interrelations of the significant philosophic concepts in Western thought and to provide training in the techniques proper to the subject. 50:730:201 Introduction to Logic, and 50:730:332 Intermediate Logic, and at least two courses in the history of philosophy provide philosophy majors with a common background, training, and language. Students majoring in philosophy are also required to take an additional eight courses in the social sciences and two courses in either biology, mathematics, or physics. Students are encouraged to have a competence in a foreign language equivalent to that obtained through the intermediate level of study. The philosophy major is urged to develop, in consultation with the advisor, a strong minor program. Stress is placed on philosophy as an activity, and the department aims to provide training sufficiently broad in scope and technical in procedure to equip the student with both a knowledge of important philosophical issues and the basis for developing an analytical judgment that is both critical and productive.

    Clifford William Howse
Clifford William Howse died on April 9, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. He passed away peacefully at the age of 58 after a courageous and valiant battle with esophageal cancer.
He was best friend, loving and much loved husband of Karen (nee Switzer); beloved father of Kerry, Adam, Sara and Russell; brother of Hazel (Bill McLaughlin), Norma (Juergen Neudoerffer), Judy (the late Doug Ward) and Wendy (John Archibald); uncle to several nieces and nephews; and a cherished friend to the Switzer family as well as many others.
He was born in Fergus, Ontario to the late Clifford Howse and Maisie (nee Nicklin). He left the home farm to attend McMaster University, receiving his BSc in chemistry in 1968, then heading to the University of Guelph for an MSc in nutrition in 1970.
He took time out in September 1970 to marry Karen before joining the ARC Institute of Animal Physiology so that he could undertake his PhD studies at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England, where Karen joined him in 1971.
In 1973 he came back to Canada and decided to return to farming, starting a small hog operation in the Niagara Peninsula. The family moved to the Winchester area in 1979, where he farmed in the former Mountain Township.

    William Clifford
Alias Mansell), divine, d. 30 April, 1670; he was the son of Henry Clifford, by his wife Elizabeth Thimelby, who as a widow joined the English Augustinian nuns at Louvain, and died, aged about seventy-seven, 3 September, 1642. Through humility Clifford never asserted his right to the Barony of Cumberland. After education and ordination at Douai, he came on the English mission. As vice-president, he helped the English College at Lisbon through difficult times, and became superior of Tournay College (Paris), assigned by Cardinal Richelieu to the English clergy. He evaded being made bishop in 1660, declined in 1670 the presidency of Douai, and closed his life in the Hopital des Incurables in Paris. Clifford's works are: "Christian Rules proposed to a vertuous Soule" (Paris, 1615), dedicated to Mrs Ursula Clifford; "The Spirituall Combat", translated by R.R. (Paris, 1656), dedicated to Abbot Montague; "Little Manual of Poore Man's Dayly Devotion" (2nd edition, Paris, 1670), often reprinted; "Observations upon Kings' Reigns since the Conquest" (MS.); "Collections concerning Chief Points of Controversy" (MS.)
