Report on the ICHM-sponsored Day of Lectures (January 9, 02004) at the AMS-MAA meeting in Phoenix, Arizona
Karen Parshall The ICHM co-sponsored (with the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America) a day of lectures on Friday, 9 January, 2004 at the Joint Meetings held this year in Phoenix, Arizona. The session- co-organized by Joseph W. Dauben, Lehman College (CUNY), Karen V. H. Parshall, University of Virginia, and David E. Zitarelli, Temple University-drew an audience that varied during the day between 50 and 200. It was comprised of the following talks: Speaker: Maria Sol de Mora (marcharles@inicia.es), Mary Sol de Mora, Plaza Adriano, 7, Sobretico, 08021 Barcelona, Spain. Title: Analytic Geometry: Descartes versus Fermat Title: The Brachistochrone Problem and Its Sequels Abstract: To a large extent Hilbert's well-known list of problems (Paris, 1900) steered the course of mathematics in the 20th century. However, posing problems is an old mathematical tradition and there are many famous problems from the 17th century, among them the most influential Brachistochrone Problem (Johann Bernoulli, 1696). As a consequence of this problem mathematical physics (in its actual meaning) got its start by developing essential variational methods that resulted in a new branch of mathematics. Moreover, the concept of an analytic function was formulated (Joh. Bernoulli, 1697) and extended (Euler, since 1727). This lecture gives a comprehensive overview on these cornerstones of mathematics.

HISTORICAL NOTE
These records are the official files of Jason Richard Swallen while he was employed by the Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, 1936-1946, and the Department of Botany, United States National Museum, 1946-1964. Jason Richard Swallen (1903- ) was born in Alliance, Ohio. He received his A.B. from Ohio Wesleyan in 1924, and his M.S. from Kansas State College in 1925. Swallen accepted the position of junior botanist with the Bureau of Plant Industry in 1925 and became an assistant botanist in 1931 and an associate botanist in 1936 with the Bureau. Swallen joined the United States National Museum in 1946 when he became associate curator, Division of Plants. Then the Division was reorganized into the Department of Botany in 1947, Swallen became curator of the Division of Grasses. In 1950, Swallen became head curator of the Department, and in 1964, chairman of the Department. At the same time he continued to maintain his title as curator of the Division of Grasses. Swallen resigned his positions in 1964 and became a research scientist with the Department of Botany. His ties with the Museum and the Department were severed during the following year.

, professor emeritus of radiology, died December 23 in Chicago at age 80. A pioneer in medical physics, he was instrumental in starting the University's graduate program in that field. In the 1940s Lanzl worked on the Manhattan Project, following the project to Los Alamos. Returning to the University as a senior physicist at Argonne Cancer Research Hospital, he then joined the Franklin McLean Research Institute. He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth, an editor at the Institute; a daughter; a son; and three grandsons.
Herbert B. Fried, JD'32 , founder of the Law School's placement office, died December 3 in Glencoe, IL. He was 91. von Teubner-Titeln, die
- für die Entwicklung des mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Verlagsprogramms / für
das Ansehen des Verlages besonders wichtig waren
