The mathematics of the early Polytechnischen Schule (founded 1825) was aligned by the practical needs of the engineers and architects. Therefore Descriptive Geometry was of great importance. The first geometry teacher was Guido Schreiber, a former artillery officer of the “Großherzog von Baden”. His successor Christian Wiener distinguisly represented almost half a century the Geometry at Karlsruhe the University. Schreiber and Wiener became well known as authors of important educational books about Descriptive Geometry.
      Jacob Lüroth (1844 - 1910)
The first two distinguished teachers holding a mathematic chair were Jacob Lüroth (1868-1880) and Ernst Schröder, (1876-1902). Lüroths main field was geometry, including Differential Geometry and Analysis. Schröder was a pioneer in logics, showing in his book, "Der Operationskreis des Logikkalküls"; (Karlsruhe, 1877) an elegant and axiomatic illustration of Boole logic. However, Schröder became especially known for his bookset; "Algebra der Logik"; (Leipzig, 1890, 1891, 1895), which was, during his time, a standard work of the formal logic. However, at the beginning of the 20's this book was not longer updated.

An Excursion to the Karakoram Range in Northern Pakistan
Abstract of Presentation by Russell F. Dubiel, U.S. Geological Survey: In 1997 Russ and four friends trekked in the Karakoram Range of Baltistan in northern Pakistan to visit climbers from Colorado who were attempting to climb Gasherbrum II, one of the world’s four-teen 8000-meter peaks. On the way, they passed five of those 8000-meter peaks, including K2, second in height only to Mt. Everest in the Himalayas. The trip covered 28 days, over 200 miles of hiking, and traversed a 20,000-ft pass. The Karakoram Range contains the greatest concentration of high peaks in the world, along with spectacular examples of alluvial fans, braided rivers, and glacial geology. Russ will present an overview of the trip, general geology, and the intriguing Muslim culture.

INTRODUCTORY NOTE
The account of the latter part of Theis' life has, of necessity, been presented differently than the part based on Theis' autobiography; whereas his account was strictly chronological, the latter part is organized around activities that may have overlapped in time. Critical reviews of the manuscript by Roy Cruz, John Flager, Bobbie Cloud, and William E. Hale are gratefully acknowledged.
CHARLES VERNON THEIS
Charles Vernon Theis was born in Newport, Ky., on March 27, 1900, the second son of Edwin David and Ida Holbrook Theis. His older brother, Raymond, was born in 1896. When Theis was christened at the age of four, he was allowed to choose his own middle name. He was at the time interested in the story of George Washington and his home, Mount Vernon, so Theis chose Vernon as his middle name, though he later grew to dislike it. In later years he was known by almost everyone as C.V. Why was he C.V.? Why wasn't he Charlie? We do not know. His demeanor elicited respect. The formal caption on the frontispiece is out of respect; elsewhere we refer to C.V. His peers and friends called him C.V.; Gladys, his wife, called him C.V.; he referred to himself as C.V. Subordinates and deferential coworkers referred to him as Dr. Theis. A very few close friends addressed him as Charles; he did not like Charlie and no one who really knew him called him that. Both boys excelled in school. Before C.V. was old enough to attend school, he studied the books that Raymond brought home, so that by the time he entered the first grade, he could do all the mathematics problems through the section on short division in McGuffey's primer.

Abstract. Objectives of the project which concerns electronic archiving of old manuscripts and books and their publishing in electronic phototype form are discussed in this paper. Key words . Digitization, scientific heritage, cultural heritage, virtual library
1. Introduction
The overall aim for the digital library is to create a comprehensive and semantically interconnected collection of retro-digitized books and other digital documents. Objectives of the project include electronic archiving of old manuscripts and books, their publishing in electronic phototype form and finally presentation to the general audience. Our proposal is mathematically inclined, more specifically, the project is concerned with digitization of old books and other manuscripts satisfying the following criteria:
  • Books and other manuscripts contained in Serbian public and semi-open libraries. By a semi-open library we mean any departmental library and private collections of books. Books and manuscripts selected for digitization should be related with mathematical sciences: mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, physics and mathematical geography. Books considered for digitization had to be published before certain date in the past. We have chosen for this date the beginning of the Second World War (1941).

    The 'Famous Cubic Surfaces' Galery
    The Clebsch Diagonal Surface
The Clebsch Diagonal Surface is one of the most famous cubic surfaces because of its symmetry and the fact that it's the only one with ten Eckardt Points From its equation x^3+y^3+z^3+w^3 - (x+y+z+w)^3 , it is easy to see, that this cubic is invariant under permutations on 5 letters (by setting t:=-(x+y+z+w)). This is the reason for the symmetry of the set of the corresponding six points in the plane. From the picture below the surface (where those points and the lines and conics connecting them are drawn) one sees immediately, that there are ten Eckardt Points (points, where three lines meet in a point). A bibliography of Alfred Clebsch
    The Cayley Cubic
The Cayley Cubic is very famous, too, because of its symmetry and the fact that it contains four double points (which is the maximum number for any cubic surface). Its equation is given by 4(x^3+y^3+z^3+w^3) - (x+y+z+w)^3 . From the picture below the surface, one sees immediately, that there are four double points on the surface (each one corresponds to a set of three points on a line in the plane).

Journal of Number Theory Consider a curve of genus one over a field K in one of three explicit forms: a double cover of P , a plane cubic, or a space quartic. For each form, a certain syzygy from classical invariant theory gives the curve's jacobian in Weierstrass form and the covering map to its jacobian induced by the K -rational divisor at infinity. We give a unified account of all three cases. Read the MathSciNet review

Dear Sunil: Thanks for your question. Lets begin with some definitions. In we find: Acoustics: the science concerned with the production, control, transmission, reception, and effects of sound. The term is derived from the Greek akoustos, meaning “hearing.” Beginning with its origins in the study of mechanical vibrations and the radiation of these vibrations through mechanical waves, acoustics has had important applications in almost every area of life. It has been fundamental to many developments in the arts—some of which, especially in the area of musical scales and instruments, took place after long experimentation by artists and were only much later explained as theory by scientists. For example, much of what is now known about architectural acoustics was actually learned by trial and error over centuries of experience and was only recently formalized into a science.
