Se doctoró en 1848 por la Universidad de Halle. Fue profesor de física en la Escuela Real de Artillería e Ingeniería de Berlín (1850-1855) y en las universidades de Zurich (1855-1867), Wurzburg (1867) y Bonn (1869). Fue uno de los fundadores de la termodinámica. En 1850 enunció el segundo principio de la termodinámica como la imposibilidad de flujo espontáneo de calor de un cuerpo frío a otro de caliente, sin la aplicación de un trabajo externo. Carnot, Sadi (1796-1832) Caloric Theory : The theory that heat consisted of a fluid (called caloric), which could be transferred from one body to another, but not "created" or "destroyed." The theory was refuted by Rumford, Joule, Mayer, Clausius , and others. Rumford was among the first to show that work could be converted to heat during the process of boring cannons, but his results were largely ignored.
Clausius, Rudolf (1822-1888) German physicist who reconciled the results of Joule with the theories of Sadi Carnot by abandoning the idea that heat was conserved. He stated formally the equivalence of heat and work (First Law of Thermodynamics ) and developed the concept of entropy (which he named in 1865) to explain the directionality of physical processes. He discovered the fact that entropy can never decrease in a physical process and can only remain constant in a reversible process, a result which became known as the Second Law of Thermodynamics . Clausius also coined the word "virial" used in the virial equations. Clausius also extended Clapeyron's equation and in 1870, derived the virial theorem, which states that for a bound gravitational system

Bonn), német matematikai fizikus, ô fogalmazta meg a termodinamika második fôtételét, és ô alapozta meg a termodinamikát mint egzakt tudományt. Clausiust 1850-ben kinevezték a berlini Tüzérségi és Muszaki Fôiskola fizikaprofesszorává. Ugyanebben az évben tette közzé a termodinamika második fôtételét a közismert megfogalmazásban: "hô önmagától nem mehet át egy hidegebb testbôl egy melegebbe". Eredményeit alkalmazva részletesen kidolgozta a gôzgép elméletét, hangsúlyozva az entrópia (a rendelkezésre álló energia disszipálódása) szerepét. 1855-ben lett a zürichi Polytechnikum fizikaprofesszora. Két évvel késôbb azzal járult hozzá az elektrolízis (molekuláknak elektromos úton való szétbontása) elméletéhez, hogy felvetette: a molekulák folyamatosan kicserélôdô atomokból állnak, és az elektromos erô nem okozója, csak egyszeruen irányítója a kicserélôdésnek. Ez a nézet vált késôbb az elektrolitikus disszociáció, a molekuláknak töltött atomokra vagy ionokra való bomlását leíró elmélet alapjává. 1867-ben a Würzburgi Egyetemen, 1869-ben a Bonni Egyetemen lett a fizika professzora. A molekuláris fizikában Clausius újrafogalmazta Sadi Carnot francia fizikusnak a hôerôgépek hatásfokára vonatkozó elvét, és ezzel sokkal szilárdabb alapokra helyezte a hôelméletet.

Today the laws of Thermodynamics can be applied to Cosmology and Creationalism. The first law: Energy can not be created or destroyed,it merely changes form, could mean the Unverse did not create itself. And, the law of Entropy: that the universe and earth,too, are degenerating, confutes the futuristic idealism of spontaneous improvement and manifest destiny without devine intervention.
