Samuel Clarke was born at Norwich on October 11, 1675. He took his B.A. degree at Cambridge in 1695 by defending Newton's views, which then were still far from uncontroversial. His tutor apparently convinced him to provide a new annotated Latin translation of Rohault's Treatise of Physics . The translation was published in 1697 and Clarke's notes in effect criticized Cartesian physics in favor of Newton's. In that same year, Clarke befriended Whiston, who probably introduced him into the Newtonian circle, of which he soon became a leading figure. His relation with Newton is somewhat unclear, in part because none of their correspondence (if there was any, since they were neighbors for many years) survives; however, in contrast to many members of the Newtonian circle, it seems that he never fell out of favor with Newton. In 1704 he delivered his first set of Boyle Lectures under the title

Samuel Clarke 's parents were Hannah Parmenter and Edward Clarke. Hannah was the daughter of a Norwich merchant while Edward was a cloth manufacturer. Samuel was educated in Norwich, attending the Norwich Free Grammar School from 1685 to 1690, then entering Caius College, Cambridge in 1691. At Cambridge he [2]:- ... was noted for the range of his interests and his attempt to span all fields of knowledge in an age when science, and learning more generally, were increasingly becoming the province of the expert. He studied Newton 's works, going deeply into both the mathematics and physics, but he also studied divinity and classical studies. He graduated in 1695 offering parts of Newton 's Principia for his final examinations. He became a Fellow of Caius College, Cambridge, as a result of his performance in defending a proposition from Newton 's Principia in a disputation. He held this fellowship from 1696 to 1700. One of the tasks he undertook at this time was a Latin translation of Rohault's

London, printed by T. Ratcliffe and E. Motterhead…, 1652.
Samuel Clarke is best known as a writer of lives. He was an Anglican clergyman and was relatively well-connected, though never achieved great stature in the church. This work is a history of martyrdom in the English church with some lives of divines appended. He sometimes used the acronym of his name Su[c]k all Cream.

ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
philosophy
Clarke, Samuel (1675-1729)
A collection of papers, which passed between the late learned Mr. Leibnitz, and Dr.Clarke, in the years 1715 and 1716 : relating to the principles of natural philosophy and religion.
London : Printed for James Knapton ..., 1717.
The Leibniz/Clarke correspondence is one of the richest early modern sources of discussion about the philosophical implications of Newton’s natural philosophy. It comprises an exchange of ten letters, or papers, which explore a range of issues with a striking clarity and depth. The exchange is best known for its discussion of absolute vs relative space, but many other fundamental questions in metaphysics are examined. There are treatments of the impact of Newton’s thought for religion, discussions of the nature of the void, the Principle of Sufficient Reason and the Identity of Indiscernibles. This first edition was prepared for publication by the divine Samuel Clarke (1675-1729) and quickly became immensely popular.

CLARKE, SAMUEL Clarke afterwards devoted himself to the study of Scripture in the original, and of the primitive Christian writers. Having taken holy orders, he became chaplain to John Moore (1646-1714), bishop of Norwich, who was ever afterwards his friend and patron. In 1699 he published two treatises, one entitled Three Practical Essays on Baptism, Confirmation and Repentance, and the other, Some Reflections on that part of a book called Amyntor, or a Defence of Miltons Life, which relates to the Writings of the Primitive Fathers, and the Canon of the New Testament. In 1701 he published A Paraphrase upon the Gospel of St Matthew, which was followed, in 1702, by the Paraphrases upon the Gospels of S~ Mark and St Luke, ~nd soon afterwards by a third volume upon St John. They were subsequently printed together in two volumes and have since passed through several editions. He intended to treat in the same manner the remaining books of the New Testament, but his design was unfulfilled. Meanwhile he had been presented by Bishop Moore to the rectory of Drayton, near Norwich. As Boyle lecturer, he dealt in 1704 with the Being and Attributes of God, and in 1705 with the Evidences of Natural and Revealed Religion. These lectures, first printed separately, were afterwards published together under the title of A Discourse concerning the Being and Attril~utes of God, 1/fe Obligations of Natural Religion, and the Truth and Certainly of the Christian Revelation, in opposition to Hobbes, Spinoza, Ike author of the Oracles of Reason, and other Deniers of Natural and Revealed Religion.
