History of sociology at Aberdeen

William Robertson Smith

Robert MacIver
History of sociology at Aberdeen
The study of society has a long tradition at Aberdeen. Some of the founding figures of modern sociology researched and taught at the University in the early days of these disciplines.
William Robertson Smith
The work of William Robertson Smith (1846-94) was a very great influence on nineteenth and early twentieth century anthropology, sociology and psychology. The son of an Aberdeenshire minister, Robertson Smith progressed to an undergraduate career at the University, under the tutelage of the professor of Rhetoric and Logic, Alexander Bain. From 1870 onwards, he was professor of Oriental languages and Old Testament exegesis. After leaving Aberdeen he became editor-in-chief of The Encyclopaedia Britannica, and professor of Arabic at Cambridge. Among his more well-known works are The Old Testament in the Jewish Church The Prophets of Israel (1882), and

There are five models by Borchardt in the catalog of the Kensington collection , but the note at the end of the list indicates that the models were executed by the late Ferdinand Engel, "known from the drawings, which he has furnished to Prof. Schellbach's `Darstellende Optik'" [SKensington1, p. 38]. Perhaps Borchardt copied the models from these drawings?

Full text.
From: P. Christou, Partakers of God Holy Cross Orthodox Press , Brookline Mass 1984.
Typed kindly for Myriobiblos by the Holy Monastery of Theomitor, Ilioupolis FOREWORD The selection of Professor Panagiotes Chrestou to give the Patriarch Athenagoras Memorial Lectures this year is a very happy one. Perhaps more than any other scholar , he can be linked with the great Patriarch. Born in the same village in Epiros , Greece , Professor Chrestou has known Patriarch Athenagoras from an early age. Considering himself a « spiritual child » of the Patriarch , Professor Chrestou has , during his academic career , done more for Patristic studies (a favorite with the late Patriarch) than any other modern Greek scholar. Professor Chrestou’s selection was equally felicitous for Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology where he began his long and distinguished teaching career. It is , therefore , with much pleasure and a great deal of pride that the present Patriarch Athenagoras Memorial Lectures are presented to our reading public.

    Hi Paul and everyone else,
I have been following this thread with great interest. It
makes sense that the aligned muscle fibers will act as a diffraction
grating and produce an iridescence. The meat science people in Iowa
State probably see it most often in cured red meats. That's where I
    have seen it.
The explanation is the same. The regularly spaced ends of
muscle fibers act as a diffraction grating. The curing does something to help hold the fibers in place, I presume. Best regards, George Chang UC Berkeley This archive was generated by hypermail 2b29 Mon Apr 03 2000 - 14:48:02 PDT
