The essays are arranged alphabetically by the women's best-known professional names. A better arrangement would have been by the periods within which the women worked; an approximation to that can be achieved by using the list in Appendix A of the included women ordered by birthdate. With its many appendices and its two good indexes, the bibliographic structure of this book is excellent. This together with its reviews of the work of many less-known women mathematicians makes it a valuable contribution to the history of mathematics.

The Chicago-born lawyer-turned-actor and playwright's biggest dramatic success is this romantic comedy about a feckless young man made the guardian of his uncle's adopted daughter, who falls in love with him. His other major success was his adaptation of Lew Wallace's Ben-Hur in 1899. Ben-Hur . Young's dramatization of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel is one of the most spectacular productions ever attempted on Broadway, with a chorus of eighty, 120,000 square feet of scenery, and the use of actual horses for the climactic chariot race. A popular sensation, the play would tour for many years.

This course is primarily intended to be a mathematics course, rather than a course on the history of mathematics. The rationale for the selection of the works to be studied is their mathematical significance. We will see first-hand examples of great mathematics, and learn something about the women who produced it, sometimes under challenging circumstances. The best way to study mathematical masterpieces is to read original writings and you will see that such studies can turn into an exciting and mathematically beneficial endeavor. We will be reading excerpts of original works by Florence Nightingale (statistics)

C ourageous: Marie-Yolande Saint-Fleur Port-au-Prince, Haiti Marie-Yolande Saint-Fleur, as a photographer and founder of "Agence Haitienne d'Images," captured the repression of Haiti's citizens and the violence of its military rulers. At the time of her Courage in Journalism award, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported, " The military coup that toppled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide abruptly ended a flourishing period for the Haitian media. The Haitian Armed Forces and their paramilitary squads intimidated and attacked news outlets."
Because of her photographs, Saint-Fleur was targeted by both the military and armed civilians. Her photo agency was forced to close after the coup and Saint-Fleur, fearing for her life, was forced into hiding, fleeing to remote areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In 1993, she returned to Haiti, but after she was shot at and armed civilians repeatedly threatened her because of her continued reporting, Saint-Fleur sought refuge in the United States.Fleur received the " 1995 Courage in Journalism Award" from the International Women's Media Foundation <http://www.iwmf.org/index.htm>

Sujet
The purpose of the present essay is two-fold. First, to give a brief overview of the totality of the mathematical work of the Youngs from a modern viewpoint; it is hoped that this would be an useful complement to the obituary articles of Hardy and Cartwright which are included in this volume.
Second, to explain the rationale behind the choice of the 52 articles selected for inclusion in the present volume, out of a total of 215 which appear in the Mathematical Bibliography of the Youngs. This mathematical work is divided into three broad categories: theory of real functions, Fourier analysis and miscellaneous.

Ohio becomes the 17th state on March 1, the first state in the Northwest Territory. Jared Mansfield , a graduate of Yale, begins his work as United States Surveyor General. He establishes a principal meridian, that will become the boundary between Ohio and Indiana, at the mouth of the Great Miami River and begins to lay out a grid of north-south and east-west range lines. After the War of 1812 he will become professor of natural philosophy at West Point. The city of Mansfield, Ohio, is named for him. Ohio University, founded by Manasseh Cutler and Rufus Putnam, is chartered as the first public institution of higher education in the Northwest Territory. It will be 15 years before college classes are held, with James Irvine as the first professor of mathematics. Carl Friedrich Gauss publishes a memoir on the method of least squares. Miami University is chartered. It will be 15 years before college classes are held, with John Annan as the first professor of mathematics. The London Mathematical Society's (LMS's) Women in Mathematics Committee has announced a new fund, the so-called Grace Chisholm Young Fellowships. These fellowships aim to provide some support to get a researcher in mathematics started again when their career has been interrupted for personal reasons. Support will come under the form of a host institute being sponsored with £500 to provide fellows with the use of facilities such as library and IT equipment. Candidates must be based in a mathematics department in a university or research institute in the UK but cannot be already considered as employees. More information can be found on the LMS Web site Molecular Biology Prize
If you are an industrious molecular biologist in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, it is worth noting that the Engelhorn Foundation has announced its 2005 Young Researcher Prize under the heading of "Molecular Determined Function". The prize, which is worth €10,000, is specifically aimed at researchers under 35 years of age. Closing date for application is 31 July 2004. The Engelhorn Foundation also funds outstanding postdoctoral research projects in the life sciences particularly in biotechnology and genetics. More information can be found on the foundation's

grace chisholm young receives a doctorate in mathematics in Germany the firstwoman to get a doctorate by regular examination processes.
http://www.timelinescience.org/years/1900.htm
1851 to 1900 Setting the scene The development of universities throughout Europe along with scientific societies begins to make it possible for relatively poor people and people without wealthy patrons to study science. During this period scientists begin to travel much more widely in order to exchange ideas with fellow scientists at conferences and other meetings. England lags rather behind the times with these developments, as much teaching is still done by churchmen and the emphasis is on practical ideas. In the USA science is also the poor relation. The emphasis in that rapidly developing country is on technology - machines and gadgets to make life easier. Early in this period President Louis Napoleon of France declares himself the emperor Napoleon III. He is later disgraced, leading his country to defeat in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. Karl Marx writes Das Kapital , his book about economics and society.

Women's Committee
This Committee aims to encourage women to participate in all areas of economic and social history. The Committee pursues this objective through its sponsorship of activities aimed to encourage women’s interests and activities. In the recent past these have included an annual workshop and a dedicated session at the Annual Conference of the Economic History Society. The Committee has also encouraged and sponsored proposals to the publications committee for volumes related to the economic and social history of women. The Committee makes an annual report to the Council of the Society and the organisers of the Annual Workshop make an independent report to the Treasurer and Council. Chair: Professor EA Laurence Secretary: Dr K Honeyman Communications Officer: Dr HJ Paul The Seventeenth Annual Workshop of the Women's Committee of the Economic History Society If you would be interested in organising the annual workshop for November 2006 contact Anne Laurence or Katrina Honeyman A venue outside London is slightly preferred.
