In Memoriam: Shiing-Shen Chern, 1911-2004
By Thomas F. Banchoff One of the great ones is gone. Professor Shiing-Shen Chern, one of the outstanding mathematicians of the twentieth century, died at age 93 in Tianjin, China, on December 3, 2004 at the Nankai Institute that he helped to found on the campus of Tianjin University where he received his undergraduate degree in 1930. He received the National Medal of Science in 1975 and the Wolf Prize in 1983/4. He edited a volume on Global Geometry and Analysis in the MAA Studies in Mathematics Series in 1967; his article “Curves and Surfaces in Euclidean Space,” in that volume, was awarded the Chauvenet Prize in 1970. He was a member of the MAA for 55 years. Prof. Chern earned his Ph.D. in 1936 in Hamburg with Wilhelm Blaschke. He spent a post-doctoral year with Elie Cartan in Paris, and returned to teach in China. He visited the Institute for Advanced Study in 1943-5, and returned to the US in 1949 for another short stay at the IAS. He taught at the University of Chicago until 1960 when he came to the University of California, Berkeley, until he retired in 1979. He directed 47 Ph.D. theses, and, by latest count, had 467 mathematical descendants. In his “retirement”, he spent his efforts in two research institutes that he helped to found. He served as the first director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley from 1981 to 1984. In 1985, he was one the chief founders of the Nankai Institute in Tianjin, China, for which he served as honorary director until his death. The MSRI produced an excellent tribute to him in 1998; see

Chen Xingshen
Shiing-shen CHERN pinyin October 26 December 3 ) was a Chinese mathematician , who was one of the leading differential geometers of the twentieth century. He was born in Kashing Chekiang Province in China. From 1926, he was a student at Nankai University in Tientsin (where he moved to be with his father four years earlier), graduating in mathematics in 1930. He was a master student under Dan SUN at Tsing Hua University from 1931 to 1934, working on projective differential geometry In 1932 Wilhelm Blaschke from the University of Hamburg visited Tsing Hua and was impressed with Chern. In 1934 Chern went on a scholarship to Hamburg , working on the Cartan- Kähler Élie Cartan in Paris , returning to Beijing, China to a professorial position in Tsing Hua (which had evacuated to Kunming after the Japanese attacks). In 1943 Chern went to the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton , working there on characteristic classes in differential geometry. Shortly after he was invited by

Professor Chern is widely regarded as the greatest geometer of his generation. For more than six decades, he has been a leader in the field of differential geometry and has made contributions to such diverse areas as web geometry, integral geometry, complex manifolds, minimal submanifolds and characteristic classes. Professor Chern completed his doctorate in 1936 in Hamburg. Upon returning to China, he earned renown for introducing modern mathematics in China and training a new generation of Chinese mathematicians. Professor Chern taught at the University of Chicago from 1949 to 1960, when he came to Berkeley. He retired in 1979.

Contents:
  • Chern–Weil Theory for Characteristic Classes
  • Bott and Duistermaat–Heckman Formulas
  • Gauss–Bonnet–Chern Theorem
  • Poincaré–Hopf Index Formula: An Analytic Proof
  • Morse Inequalities: An Analytic Proof
  • Thom–Smale and Witten Complexes

Berkeley's Scientific Legacy
Shiing-Shen Chern and the New Geometry
In the esoteric world of pure mathematics, Shiing-Shen Chern was a 20th century champion. The professor emeritus of mathematics died in December at the age of 93, but his achievements as a world-renowned geometer live on through their impact on such high-profile fields as string theory and computer graphics. Shiing-Shen Chern ( China Daily photo) Chern is known for his innovations in differential geometry, exploring the complexities of geometric figures by mathematically describing their shape. Differential geometry had its first heyday in the 19th century but the field was dormant by the time it caught Chern's eye during the 1930s. Chern's passion and genius reinvigorated the field, transforming it into a dynamic and vibrant area of study. "By his stubborn trumpeting of the importance of geometry, people in the 1940s and '50s reluctantly acknowledged it — it must be, because Chern said so," Chern's friend and colleague, UC Berkeley mathematics professor Hung-Hsi Wu has said.
