HOUSTON JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS
Editorial, Electronic Edition Vol. 28, No. 2, 2002 It gives us distinct pleasure to dedicate this issue to Professor Shiing-Shen Chern. Prof. Chern had been an editor of the Houston Journal of Mathematics from 1992 to 2000. His association with the Department of Mathematics involved yearly visits and stimulating lectures that began in 1988. He has collaborated with members of the department in publications and in organizing conferences. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor Emeritus of the University of Houston. Professor Chern is also Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, and Director Emeritus of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (M.S.R.I.). He is the founding father of three renowned institutes: the Institute of Mathematics of the Academia Sinica, the M.S.R.I., and the Nankai Institute of Mathematics. Professor Chern has rather broad but impeccable tastes in Mathematics. We have taken the liberty of singling out some areas in which he has made profound contributions: real and complex differential geometry, several complex variables, and Finsler geometry. The collection of papers that we have assembled in this issue comes from a small cross-section of mathematicians in whose careers Professor Chern has played a unique role. We are delighted, but not surprised, that the authors in question submitted their manuscripts with much enthusiasm. We hope this special issue will become a source of inspiration for many years to come.

Shiing-Shen Chern
Mathematician and much-loved teacher who redefined global differential geometry
IN THE international world of pure mathematics, Shiing-Shen Chern was a towering figure. From the 1940s onwards he redefined the subject of geometry, combining the global viewpoint of topology with the type of detailed calculations that used to drive Einstein to despair. Beyond that, he was also a source of inspiration for all Chinese mathematicians. Born in the final year of the Qing dynasty, and educated at a time when China was only beginning to set up Western-style universities, he spent a lifetime going back and forth from East to West carrying news of the latest developments and encouraging young mathematicians. Of those he taught, C-N. Yang won a Nobel Prize in Physics and S-T.Yau the Fields medal, its mathematical equivalent. Perhaps the ultimate measure of his achievement was his presiding, next to President Jiang Zemin, over the opening of the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians, with 1,700 Chinese mathematicians in active discussion with 2,500 from the rest of the world.

HKUST Establishes S S Chern Lecture to Enhance Knowledge
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has established the Shiing-Shen Chern Lecture, with Professor Chen-Ning Yang, 1957 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to deliver the inaugural lecture on Saturday, 9 November 2002.
Prof Shiing-Shen Chern Prof Chern, currently visiting HKUST, has been hailed as one of the greatest geometers of the 20th century. In 1944, he stunned the mathematical world with the development of the Chern characteristic classes in fibre spaces, which have made an important impact on all areas of mathematics.
His success has inspired many students to follow his example, including Nobel Laureate Prof Chen-Ning Yang, and Prof Shing-Tung Yau, the first Chinese to receive the prestigious Fields Medal in 1982.
"We hope to attract renowned scientists from around the world to visit HKUST every year and give lectures on the latest developments at the frontiers of research," says Prof Shiu Yuen Cheng, Associate Dean of Science and Head of the Department of Mathematics. Prof Cheng studied under Prof Chern when he was a PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley.
The 91-year-old Chern was born in Jia Xing, Zhejiang, China in 1911. He graduated from Nankai University, Tianjin, in 1930, and received a master's degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 1934. In 1935, he made the unusual choice to study in Germany, under Wilhelm Blaschke at Hamburg University, and completed his PhD dissertation in less than a year. He went to Princeton University, US, from 1943 to 1945, where he developed the famous Chern characteristic classes, opening up a new era for differential geometry.

An Essay on Shiing-shen Chern
Shiing-shen Chern is the foremost geometer of our time. His mathematical work, centering on geometry and spanning almost seven decades, has shaped large areas of modern mathematics. More than any other mathematician he defined the subject of global differential geometry, one of the central areas in contemporary mathematics. The depth and originality of his mathematical insight is seen in the many basic concepts of modern mathematics to which his name is attached: Chern classes, the Chern-Weil map, the Chern connection, the Bott-Chern forms, Chern-Moser invariants, and the Chern-Simons invariants.
Chern's talent became apparent early. He completed his undergraduate work at Nankai University and his M.Sc degree work at Tsinghua University. In the 1930s he was sent to Europe, where he studied with Wilhelm Blaschke in Hamburg and Elie Cartan in Paris. Guided by their influence he wrote, in effect, two theses: one on web geometry and one on the differential invariants of a third-order ordinary differential equation. Both works were published and remain of interest today.
He completed his work on the Chern classes during a brief return to China after the war. Then he moved to the University of Chicago, where together with Weil and others he helped to establish one of the leading mathematics departments in the world. During this period his work arrived at the center of mathematical life. Through it and his influence on colleagues, Chern guided the field of differential geometry and led it into interaction with essentially all aspects of geometry, including topology, algebraic geometry, integral geometry, complex geometry, exterior differential systems, global analysis, and partial differential equations.
