James Joseph Sylvester:
Life and Work in Letters
by Karen Hunger Parshall
Reviewed by June Barrow-Green
By comparison with his contemporaries, James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897), one of the dominant figures of nineteenth-century British mathematics, had an unconventional career. He twice crossed the Atlantic in pursuit of academic employment, he held chairs in London, Woolwich and Oxford, and for more than a decade he was engaged in the practice of law. But while Sylvester may have spent many years physically separated from the mainstream of British and European mathematics, his letter-writing ensured that he remained very much in touch with its developments. Sylvester, like many Victorian mathematicians, was a prolific correspondentalthough not in quite the same league as Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) who wrote more than 98,000 letters in the last 37 years of his life! As Karen Hunger Parshall shows, Sylvester's correspondence makes for informative reading. From a collection of some 1200 letters of Sylvester and his circle Parshall has selected 140 "to cover Sylvester's life and work as completely and as substantively as the imperfect historical record allows." [p.viii] Starting with Sylvester's application for the chair of Natural Philosophy at University College London (UCL) in 1837, and ending with a letter to the Editor of

    DESARGRES, G.(1591-ca.1662)
In 1639, nine years after kepler's death, there appeared in Paris a remarkably original but little -heeded treatise on the conic sections. It was written by Gerard Desargues, an engineer, architectm and one-time French army officer, who was born in Lyons in 1591 and who died in the same city about 1662. The work was so generally neglected by other mathematicians that it was soon forgotten, and all copies of the publication disappeared. Two centuries later, when the French geometer Michel Chasles(1793-1880) wrote his still-valuable history of geometry, there was no means of estimating the valus of Desargues'work. Six years later, howeve, in 1845, Chasles happened upon a manyscript copy of the treatise, made by Desargues pupil. Philippe de la Hire (1640-1718); since that time, the work has been regarded as one of the classics in the early development of synthetic projective geometry.
Serveral reasons can be advanced to accont for the initial neglect of Desargues' little volume. It was overahadowed by the more supple analytic geometry introduced by Descartes two years earlier. Geometers were generally expending their energie either developing this new powerful tool or trying to apply infinitesimals to geometry. Also, Desargues adopted an unfortunate and eccentric style of writing. He introdrced some seventy new terms, many of a recondite botanical origin, of which only one

Probably almost all mathematicians working today, if they trace back to find who were their teachers and the teachers of their teachers, and so on, will find that they are the "descendants" of a number of very famous mathematicians. In my case I found that, via my splendid Ph.D. supervisor Yoram Sagher, I am the "descendant" of, among others, Jacob and Johann Bernoulli, Chebyshev, Darboux, Dirichlet, Euler, Fourier, Gauss, Hilbert, Klein, Lagrange, Leibniz, Markov, Picard, Poisson, Sierpinski, Steinhaus, and Zygmund. My mathematical "genealogy" is shown in five files. (Several files are needed because some of my "ancestors" had two Ph.D. supervisors.) Just click on each number to go to the corresponding file. I obtained the information in these files from the mathematical genealogy website.

or its "mirror", which currently works better, at
    http://www.genealogy.ams.org
More information about my teacher and my teacher's teacher's (where "teacher" means supervisor for Ph.D.) etc. and their theses can be found via this website. In these files, the year when, and city or university where a mathematician obtained his doctoral degree is written under his name, if these are known. A number in square brackets [N] next to the name of some mathematician where N=1,2,3,4 or 5, means that by clicking on that "[N]" you can move to the file which contains details of the mathematical "ancestry" of that mathematician.
