U NIVERSITY OF D ELAWARE L IBRARY Special Collections Department FORGING A COLLECTION Miscellaneous Forgeries and Hoaxes Frank Tober assembled a fascinating collection of examples of forgeries from all periods as well as secondary works about them. He also developed an interest in such related topics as hoaxes and imaginary books and libraries and collected a substantial amount of material pertaining to them. The following section presents a sample of Frank Tober's collection of miscellaneous forgeries and hoaxes. Edmund Ludlow, fl. 1691-1692. London: [s.n.], printed in the year 1693. This attack on the royalist figure Richard Hollingworth was the work of a former officer in Cromwell's army and republican pamphleteer who wrote under the name of General Ludlow. One of the focal points of his attack is an attempt to prove that the Eikon Basilike , one of the most popular works of the seventeenth century, was not the pre-execution meditations of Charles I, but rather a forgery. This overwhelmingly influential text deals with planar geometry and contains the basic definitions of the geometric elements such as the very famous ones of point, line and surface: "A point is that which has no part;" "Line is breathless length;" "A surface is that which has length and breadth only" [Euclid 1956, I:153]. It also contains a whole range of propositions where the features of increasingly complex geometric figures are defined. With numerous carefully drawn geometrical figures and illustrations in text in both works. 59, (1 blank); 24 lvs., written in a very neat, small and regular scholar's hand. Carefully written and drawn mathematical manuscript, very attractively laid out too. The first work was, as is also indicated by the manuscript title-page, actually printed at Strasbourg in 1580, but the printed work is now also very rare. Divided in two parts, it treats in a succinct and practical way, all about measurements of the fields and land surveying, as well as about measuring heights, depths and distances. The second work, teaching about geometry and geometrical solid bodies, was never printed before. The manuscript closes with the devote sentence: "Gott gebirt allein die Ehre von dem [...?] Gaben Khünst und Lehr", followed by the signature of the author, which unfortunately is for us unreadable.
