Chasles, Michel
Born: Nov. 15, 1793, ƒpernon, Fr.
Died: Dec. 18, 1880, Paris French mathematician who, independently of the Swiss-German mathematician Jakob Steiner, elaborated the theory of modern projective geometry, the study of the properties of a geometric line or plane figure that remain unchanged when the figure is projected onto a plane from a point not on either the plane or the figure. Chasles was made professor of geodesy and mechanics at the ƒcole Polytechnique, Paris, in 1841. His Aperu historique sur l'origine et le dŽveloppement des mŽthodes en gŽomŽtrie (1837; "Historical Survey of the Origin and Development of Geometric Methods") is still a standard historical reference. In 1846 he became professor of higher geometry at the Sorbonne. In that year he solved the problem of determining the gravitational attraction of an ellipsoidal mass to an external point. In 1864 he began publishing in Comptes Rendus the solutions to an enormous number of problems based on his "method of characteristics" and his "principle of correspondence." The basis of enumerative geometry is contained in the method of characteristics. Chasles was a prolific writer and published many of his original memoirs in the Journal de l'ƒcole Polytechnique . He wrote two textbooks

    MUSIC (Guitar):
Andres Segovia [1893-1987], from Spain, was the most famous guitarist of all time. He brought the classical guitar from its folk- and dance-related image to the symphonies and concert halls of the most established musical prominence. He developed an approach to plucking the guitar strings with the fingernails of the right hand, which became the dominat school of guitar, displacing the gentler and more lyrical Neapolitan school which used the fingertips. Christopher Parkening is arguably the greatest American performer of Classical Guitar. After a year of intensive Classical Guitar at Brookdale Community College, under Christopher Parkening's master student Barry Eisner, I was able to play a few baroque pieces and original compositions at community college concerts, and then retired to the occasional original song at Woodstock, various parties and resorts, and while hitchiking across America, singing for my supper. The sensational trial exposed the most colossal literary fraud ever perpetrated. The trial revealed that for 19 years, Lucas created fake literary masterpieces, mostly letters to and from famous or historical figures, and became a very wealthy man because of it. At first, Lucas used quills, inks, papers, and styles of writing used by historical French authors

If readers need any additional rationale for continuing, I would add that the incident was cited by the eminent sociologist of science, Robert K. Merton (recently deceased) in his seminal 1957 article, "Priorities in Scientific Discovery." In that article Merton explained why academic credit is awarded exclusively to those scientists (and scholars) who publish their discoveries first—because, he argued, only priority of publication can assure readers that the published work has not been plagiarized from someone else. In that article, Merton also remarked that "[Michel Chasles's] credulity stretches our own."

    Michel CHASLES
