Herbert Sydney Green 1920-1999 By Angas Hurst This memoir was originally published in Historical Records of Australian Science , vol.13, no.3, 2001. Numbers in brackets refer to the references at the end of the text.
Numbers in square brackets refer to the bibliography also at the end of the text. Introduction Bert Green's influence on the development of theoretical science in Australia during the nearly fifty years he lived here cannot be overestimated. From the time he arrived in Adelaide in July 1951 until his death on 16 February 1999 he produced articles and books covering topics as diverse as particle physics, environmental science and neurophysiology. In each of the areas in which he worked, his contributions were always marked by erudition and originality. It is not surprising, therefore, that everyone who came in contact with him, from undergraduate students to international colleagues, wrote in warm and admiring tones about their contact with him. So, although his official appointment was to the inaugural chair of Mathematical Physics in the University of Adelaide, physics was only one of the fields in which he employed his superb mathematical talent. As an example of some of the outer reaches of his interests, he once used some statistical analyses, prepared by the Dutch composer Henk Badings, of the compositions of some of the great composers to produce by computer (then the very rudimentary IBM1620) lines in the style of Beethoven and Mozart. The then Elder Professor of Music, John Bishop, was highly intrigued.

Back To Final Frontier

    Andrew Thomas
Andy Thomas was born in Adelaide 18/12/1951. His life long fascination with space flight might be traced back to 1957 when, as a boy, he watched with his father as the Earth's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, orbited over his home town. He was educated at St Peter's College in Adelaide and then at the University of Adelaide. In 1972 he gained a Bachelor of Engineering with first-class honours in mechanical engineering and received his doctorate in mechanical engineering in 1977. In 1978 he was nominated for the William Culross prize for most outstanding research carried out at the University In March 1992, Andy was amongst 19 new astronaut candidates announced by NASA. Then in June 1995, he was selected with six others to fly a mission in the shuttle Endeavour on a nine day mission. In August 1997 Andy Thomas was assigned as a backup astronaut to Dave Wolf, who was preparing to be the last American astronaut to fly in Mir . But things changed dramatically in June of the following year when the Mir space station suffered a collision with an unmanned supply spacecraft. This necessitated a reshuffling of the American astronauts' schedules and Dave Wolf's tour was moved forward while Andy Thomas replaced him on the last remaining mission

No Other Foundation, Vol. II. II. AMERICAN EVANGELISTS:
INTRODUCTION During the period 1864-1875 Churches of Christ in Australia were deeply influenced by a handful of American Evangelists. The membership grew, new initiatives were taken and conflict developed between British and American attitudes on a number of issues on which the sister movements differed. The source material in this chapter will relate, in turn, to the calling and activity of American evangelists, the work of later Colonial, British and American evangelists, the training by the Americans of local talent, conflict between British and American traditions, the calling of annual meetings, a local doctrinal issue, advocacy of Christian unity and the relationship of Churches of Christ to other religious groups. Additional material on the period can be found in the Jubilee History, in T. J. Brown (Ed.), Churches of Christ: A Historical, Biographical, and Pictorial History of Churches of Christ in the United States, Australasia, England and Canada (Louisville, J. P. Morton, Ky. 1904), in T. J. Gore (Ed.)

Parliamentary Publications and Archives Site Map Bills Hansard Directories Frequently Asked Questions Judicial Work Previous Section Index Home Page Sir Sydney Chapman: I am grateful to the hon. Member for Hendon (Mr. Dismore) for introducing the amendment. It gives us a chance to discuss a serious issue. We are discussing it in the context of the Bill being able to allow English Heritage to
"produce and publish, or sell, books, films or other informative material relating to foreign ancient monuments or foreign historic buildings",
    and to
"produce or sell souvenirs relating to such monuments or buildings".
The amendment would require English Heritage to consult. That would impose a huge burden upon it, and an unnecessary one. I tend to agree with my right hon. Friend the Member for East Yorkshire (Mr. Knight). English Heritage has a reputation for not producing tacky materials and souvenirs. First, I think that it has a sense of taste, but I recognise that that is subjective. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, English Heritage always takes great care to understand and respect cultural sensitivities. I am sure that it would always act with propriety if it were to produce an item relating to a foreign ancient monument or building. Mr. Knight:

It reflects the last Conservative Government's views, as declared in the 1996 Green and White Papers. Moreover, I think its exact provisions were included in the present Government's Culture and Recreation Bill, introduced in the last Session of the last Parliament. I gather that the Government did not proceed with the Bill because they wanted to run for cover and call a general election. Ms Debra Shipley (Stourbridge): I have two interests in the Bill. A long time ago I wrote a book for English Heritage, so I have intellectual property rights in that regard; and I am a member of the Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport. Would English Heritage be allowed to consult other expert groups, and would it be given money enabling it to perform functions that it could not otherwise perform owing to a lack of expertise or personnel? If something exciting and wonderful was discovered, what would happen in terms of the commission's exploitation of intellectual property? Will the hon. Gentleman expand on the two relevant clauses, and how they would work? Sir Sydney Chapman: I recognise the hon. Lady's interest in these matters. I trained as an architect because
