He became Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the University of London however after 15 years returned as Professor at the UNSW at St George. He has run IVF services in London, Naples, Jeddah and Sydney. Professor Chapman lectures regularly at national and international meetings, has over 80 scientific publications and many book chapters. His particular interests are in IVF, polycystic ovarian syndrome, recurrent miscarriage and period problems. Dr Raewyn Teirney Dr Raewyn Teirney is a Gynaecologist at Royal Hospital for Women. She obtained her MBChB degree from Auckland University (NZ), and a Masters of Medicine in Reproductive Health and Human Genetics from Sydney University. She undertook subspecialty training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, involving infertility research at Cambridge University and Bourn Hall IVF unit in England.

Still, the Chapman model remains at the core of the much more extensive models of ozone kinetics used by current atmospheric scientists. This set of exercises deals with his proposed mechanism. Actually Chapman proposed a set of 6 reactions, shown below: O + O > O O + O > O O + O > 2 O O > O + O 2 O > 3 O O > O + O He reasoned that reactions 1 and 5 would have negligible effect, so we will not consider them further. Assume that each step in the proposed mechanism is elementary, so that, for example, the rate of reaction (1) is rate = k [O] 1) Write expressions for the rates of change of the concentrations of O, O , and O . For example, noting that oxygen atoms are consumed in steps 2 and 3 and produced in steps 4 and 6. KIN Mag Volume 82, Issue 4 - July 2003 CLUB AND MEMBER NEWS: FORMER THOMSON ACCOUNTANT AND TIMMINS KINSMAN SYDNEY CHAPMAN DIES AT 93 The Toronto Star may have remembered him as the "accounting mastermind" of one of the world's greatest media enterprises, but the newspaper acknowledged perhaps a more personal achievement when it stated that Sydney F. Chapman had served as a Kinsman. In the obituary published shortly after Sid Chapman's death May 9 at age 93, The Star pointed to the role the "self-effacing" and "gimlet-eyed" Chapman played in helping Roy Thomson and Jack Kent Cooke transform a tiny Ontario radio broadcasting business into Canada's largest newspaper group. "Chapman was a newly graduated accountant at a western Ontario dairy in the late 1930s," wrote Gary Norris of the Canadian Press, "when he answered a help wanted ad placed by Thomson and moved to the northern town of Timmins to take charge of the finances of the fledgling media empire." Exactly when after his relocation Chapman joined the Kinsmen Club of Timmins (ON), which chartered in 1939, is not clear. His decision to become a member, however, eventually led to Chapman serving a term as the local club's president.

He studied and taught at Cambridge University and held a chair in Sheffield University before becoming the director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain in 1966. He was president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1985-86 and president of the Royal Society of London from 1985-90. He was knighted in 1972, received the Order of Merit in 1989 and was created a life peer in 1990. He is now chairman of the Center for Photomolecular Sciences at Imperial College in London. Chapman lectures are a yearly UAF event sponsored by the College of Natural Sciences. Dr. Sydney Chapman, considered one of the most distinguished geophysicists of the 20th century, was professor of geophysics and advisory scientific director of UAF's Geophysical Institute from 1951-70.
