March 24, 1948 - Sun-Yung Alice Chang was born in Ci-an, China. In 1970 she received her B.S. degree from the National University of Taiway. She came to the United States to pursue graduate studies in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, earning her Ph.D in 1974. Chang spent one year at the State University of New York at Buffalo, then became Hedrick Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the Univesity of California, Los Angeles, during 1975-77. She then taught at the University of Maryland for three years before returning to the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1980 as an associate professor, later promoted to full professor. Chang's research interests are in the fields of nonlinear partial differential equations and isospectral geometry. In 1995 she was awarded the Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize in Mathematics for "her deep contributions to the study of partial differential equations on Riemannian manifolds and in particular for her work on extremal problems in spectral geometry and the compactness of isospectral metrics within a fixed conformal class on a compact 3-manifold." Chang has been an editor of several leading mathematical journals. She was also Vice-President of the American Mathematical Society from 1989 to 1991. She has given invited addresses at major mathematics conferences, including the 1986 International Congress of Mathematicians at Berkeley.

New Orleans, LA, 2001 Previous Index Next Sun-Yung Alice Chang was born in Cian, China. Her family moved to Taiwan shortly after the Chinese revolution and she grew up in Taiwan. She received her B.A. from the National Taiwan University in 1970 and attended graduate school at University of California, Berkeley, where she wrote her Ph.D. thesis in 1974 under the supervision of Donald Sarason. Since then she has held many temporary/visiting position at various universities, including the State University of New York at Buffalo; the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Maryland, College Park; Institute for Advanced Study; Princeton University; and Mittag-Leffler Institute, Sweden. She settled down at UCLA in 1980 as an associate professor. She was promoted to full professor there in 1982 and has remained there except in 1989 when she was Professor at UC Berkeley. Since 1998, she has also been Professor at Princeton University. In her thesis, Chang worked on problems in classical analysis, in particular the study of boundary behavior of bounded analytic functions on the unit disc. Since then her research interest has gradually shifted to problems in real harmonic analysis, then to spectral theory of the Laplacian, and further to problems in geometric analysis, using PDE methods to study problems in differential geometry. She is currently interested in the conformal geometry of a class of 4-manifolds. She is developing new techniques involving higher order partial differential equations to understand the conformal structures in four dimension.

Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration. I just wanted to show off the font... Most of the mathematicans we hear about come from ancient Greece or Rome or something, so mathematicians only seem to exist in the past, and for us in Asia, in far away lands. So now, we shall introduce 2 Asian mathematicians who lived in this century. Nobel Prize in Mathematics
A trick question! There is no Nobel prize in mathematics. Why not? That question has created numerous stories, myths, and anecdotes. The most popular is that Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician, usually said to be Mittag-Leffler, and in revenge Nobel refused to endow one of his prizes in mathematics. Too bad for this story that Nobel was a life-long bachelor! The other common story is that Mittag-Leffler, the leading Swedish mathematician of Nobel's time, antagonized Nobel and so Nobel gave no prize in mathematics to prevent Mittag-Leffler from becoming a winner. This story is also suspect, however, because Nobel and Mittag-Leffler had almost no contact with each other. Most likely Nobel simply never gave any thought to including mathematics among his list of prize areas.

She also studies the related extremal inequalities and problems in isospectral geometry. Perhaps Chang's greatest honour was the award of the 1995 Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize in Mathematics. The prize is awarded every two years to a woman who has made an outstanding contribution to mathematics research in the previous five years. The award is valued at $4,000.
