Cayley, Arthur
English mathematician who developed matrix algebra, used by Werner Heisenberg in his elucidation of quantum mechanics. He also developed the study of n-dimensional geometry, introducing the concept of the 'absolute', and formulated the theory of algebraic invariants.
Cayley was born in Richmond, Surrey, and studied mathematics at Cambridge before becoming a barrister. In 1863 he became professor of pure mathematics at Cambridge.
Cayley published about 900 mathematical notes and papers on nearly every pure mathematical subject, as well as on theoretical dynamics and astronomy. Some 300 of these papers were published during his 14 years at the Bar, and for part of that time he worked in collaboration with James Joseph Sylvester , another lawyer. Together they founded the algebraic theory of invariants 1843. Cayley clarified many of the theorems of algebraic geometry that had previously been only hinted at, and he was one of the first to realize how many different areas of mathematics were drawn together by the theory of groups.

Cayley, Arthur
Born: Aug. 16, 1821, Richmond, Surrey, Eng.
Died: Jan. 26, 1895, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire English mathematician who played a leading role in founding the modern British school of pure mathematics. Cayley was born during a periodic visit of his family to England from Russia, where his father was engaged in trade. Cayley's remarkable mathematical ability became apparent by his skill as a child in doing complex calculations for amusement. On the advice of school authorities, his father, who had by then settled in England, enrolled him in May 1839 at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where he mastered Greek, French, German, and Italian and distinguished himself in mathematics. Following his graduation in 1842, he obtained a three-year appointment at Trinity, which allowed him to begin work on the problems in mathematics that occupied his attention for the next 50 years. During this extremely productive period, he also began a lifelong interest in mountaineering, painting, and travel. Because no positions in mathematics were open to him when his term ended in 1845, he entered Lincoln's Inn, London, to prepare for a legal career. Admitted to the bar in 1849, Cayley earned just enough by practicing law during the next 14 years to allow him to pursue his interest in mathematics. During this time Cayley wrote his brilliant mathematical papers. In 1850 he met James Joseph Sylvester, a fellow lawyer and mathematician, and the two thenceforth spent much time in enthusiastic collaboration.

Arthur Cayley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Arthur Cayley August 16 January 26 ) was a British mathematician . He helped found the modern British school of pure mathematics Arthur Cayley As a child, Cayley enjoyed solving complex math problems for amusement. At eighteen, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge , where he excelled in Greek, French, German, and Italian, as well as mathematics. Cayley worked as a lawyer for 14 years, but that is not what he is remembered for. While he was a lawyer he published about 250 research papers in mathematics, and later, while Sadleirian Professor at Cambridge , he published another 650. It was Cayley who first introduced matrix multiplication . He was consequently able to prove the Cayley-Hamilton theorem that every square matrix is a root of its own characteristic polynomial. He was the first to define the concept of a group in the modern way as a set with a binary operation satisfying certain laws. Formerly, when mathematicians spoke of "groups", they had meant

He became a lawyer and quit in 1863 to be Sadleirian of Pure Mathematics at Cambridge. The most important of his work is in developing the algebra of matrices (the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem), work in non-euclidean geometry and n-dimensional geometry. (1596 - 1650) - Born in La Haye (now Descartes),Touraine, France. Due to a medical condition he was granted to permision to remain in bed until 11am, whice he did everyday of his life. He was a philosopher who was primarily interested in mathematics. He lived in Paris for a while before travelling throughout Europe to countries such as Holland where began work on his first major treatise on physics. which includes his application of algebra to geometry from which we now have Cartesian geometry.

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio
