Cavalieri's Principle Bonaventura Francesco Cavalieri was born in 1598 in Milan. By 1629, Cavalieri developed a method of indivisibles which became a factor in the development of the integral calculus. Cavalieri developed his theory of indivisibles from Archimedes' method of exhaustion and incorporated Kepler's theory of infinitesionally small geometric quantities. The theory of indivisibles was presented in 1635 in Cavalieri's Geometria indivisibilis continuorum nova . It is from this theory that Cavalieri found the area and volume of various geometric figures. Cavalieri's book was widely attacked. So in reply, Cavalieri improved his exposition by publishing Exercitationes geometrica sex . Some other contributions made by Cavalieri are the tables of logarithms of trigonometric functions for astronomers. He wrote on conic sections, trigonometry, optics, astronomy, and astrology. Cavalieri also developed a general rule for the focal length of lenses and described a reflecting telescope. Cavalieri's Principle is a method for computing the volume of solid regions, much like the present-day integration (except Cavalieri's Principle is not as systematic as integration).

Bonaventura Francesco Cavalieri Né à Milan en 1598, décédé à Bologne le 30 novembre 1647. Bonaventura Cavalieri a développé la méthode des indivisibles qui allait donner naissance au calcul intégral. Cavalieri a rejoint l'ordre des Jésuites à Milan en 1615, alors qu'il n'était âgé que de 16 ans. En 1616 il gagne le monastère des Jésuites à Pise. Son intérêt pour les mathématiques a été stimulé par les travaux d' Euclide et après sa rencontre avec Galilée , il se considéra comme un disciple de l'astronome. La réunion avec Galilée avait été organisée par le Cardinal Federico Borromeo qui vit clairement le génie de Cavalieri alors qu'il était au monastère de Milan. À Pise, ce fut Benedetto Castelli, conférencier à l'université de Pise, qui enseigna les mathématiques à Cavalieri. Il lui apprit la géométrie; Cavalieri fit preuve de tellement de qualités que parfois il remplaça Castelli dans ses enseignements à l'université. Cavalieri postula la chaire de mathématiques à Bologne en 1619 mais il ne l'obtint pas; on le trouvait trop jeune pour une telle charge. Il n'obtint pas non plus la chaire de Castelli lorsque ce dernier quitta Pise pour Rome. En 1621 Cavalieri devint diacre et assistant du Cardinal Federico Borromeo au monastère de Milan. Il y enseigna la théologie jusqu'en 1623, année où il devint prieur de Saint Pierre de Lodi. Au bout de trois ans il alla au monastère des Jésuites à Parme, où il y passa encore trois ans.

Maugeri il 22 maggio 1997 (Le figure sono alla fine) Lungo tutti i secoli che vanno da Archimede (nato a Siracusa nel 287 a.C., morto ivi nel 212 a.C.) a Bonaventura Cavalieri (nato a Milano nel 1598, morto nel 1647) non vi sono stati contributi o progressi nel campo della teoria della misura, mentre da Bonaventura Cavalieri in poi la Teoria della misura e della integrazione ha avuto uno sviluppo travolgente e, a volte, fulmineo. Tuttavia, come dice G. Castelnuovo nel suo studio, Le origini del calcolo infinitesimale nell'era moderna , Feltrinelli (1962), Archimede ha già chiarissima l'idea di integrale definito e il processo di quadratura che egli impiega ha una portata maggiore dell'uso che egli ne fa; lo stesso si può dire per Bonaventura Cavalieri, la cui Teoria degli indivisibili contiene dei procedimenti successivamente ripresi nella teoria della integrazione. In effetti ciò che mancava (e non poteva essere altrimenti) ad Archimede e a Cavalieri era il concetto di funzione (e delle sue proprietà), cui si deve, secondo alcuni, l'inarrestabile sviluppo della matematica moderna. Non possedendo il concetto di funzione, sia Archimede che Cavalieri applicavano il processo di quadratura adattandolo, con osservazioni geniali, al singolo caso.

Login: Password: Your browser must have cookies turned on Jesseph, Douglas Michael "Leibniz on the Foundations of the Calculus: The Question of the Reality of Infinitesimal Magnitudes" The MIT Press Excerpt Among his achievements in all areas of learning, Leibniz's contributions to the development of European mathematics stand out as especially influential. His idiosyncratic metaphysics may have won few adherents, but his place in the history of mathematics is sufficiently secure that historians of mathematics speak of the "Leibnizian school" of analysis and delineate a "Leibnizian tradition" in mathematics that extends well past the death of its founder. This great reputation rests almost entirely on Leibniz's contributions to the calculus. Whether he is granted the status of inventor or co-inventor, there is no question that Leibniz was instrumental in instituting a new method, and his contributions opened up a vast new field of mathematical research. The foundations of this new method were a matter of some controversy, however. The Leibnizian calculus at least appears to violate traditional strictures against the use of infinitary concepts, and critics charged Leibniz with abandoning classical standards of rigor and lapsing into incoherence and error. In response, Leibniz argued that his methods were rigorous and that they did not suppose the reality of infinitesimal quantities. But the critics of the calculus were not the only ones who engaged Leibniz in a discussion of the nature of the infinitesimal. Even those sympathetic to the new method gave differing interpretations of the doctrine of infinitesimal differences, and Leibniz's own doctrine evolved out of dissatisfaction with alternative foundations for the calculus, as well as a desire to satisfy the demands of his "traditionalist" critics.
