    Problem 2: Catalan Numbers
    Background:
Question: How many binary trees can be created out of n nodes? Got an answer yet? No? Ok. I'll wait. Now do you have one? No. Hmmm... Well, perhaps I should just tell you that mathematicians have already figured it out. The answer, named in honor of Eugene Catalan, is given by the Catalan Number, C(n). An explicit formula is: C(n) = (2n)! / [ (n+1)!n! ] Clearly C(1) = 1, which makes sense since there's only 1 tree that can be created using 1 node. C (2) = 2, C (3) = 5 and so on. You can verify for yourself that the first few Catalan numbers do actually enumerate the number of binary trees. Catalan Numbers also describe the number of mountains that can be drawn using n upstrokes and n downstrokes, the number of noncrossing handshakes possible between n pairs of people, and other problems that you're probably not losing sleep over. For this problem, you are to calculate C (n) given n.
    Input:
Each line of input contains a single number, n. Input is terminated by 0.
    Output:
For each n, print C (n) on a line by itself. You may assume that each C (n) will fit inside a 64 bits.

In 1861 it was adopted by the College of Preceptors as their official publication. The College had been established in London by Royal Charter in 1849. The organization endeavored to promote sound learning, advance interest in education among the middle class, and provide means to raise the status and qualifications of teachers. Training was offered to those entering the teaching profession and periodic examinations for certification were administered to both teachers and students. A union was formed to make provisions for the families of deceased, aged, or poor members. In addition, the organization strove to facilitate better communication between teachers and the public. At monthly meetings of the College, held at Bloomsbury Square and open to the public, announcements and summaries of important educational movements were promulgated and papers were read by members concerning the theory and practice of education. ET contains notices of available scholarships, lists of successful candidates on examinations given by the College, notices of vacancies for teachers and governesses, book reviews, and textbook advertisements. Undoubtedly, the most important feature of this monthly journal was a section devoted to mathematical problems and their solutions. From 1864 to 1918 problems and solutions which had appeared in the journal were republished semiannually in

    Catalan's Conjecture II
Abstract: An old problem, dating back at least to Eugene Catalan in the 19th century, is whether 8 and 9 are the only two consecutive perfect powers (of positive integers). Despite the simplicity of its statement, this problem resisted the efforts of some of the world's greatest mathematicians until 1976, when Rob Tijdeman showed that if xp - yq = 1 (where x, y, p and q are positive integers with p and q at least 2), then x, y, p and q are bounded by an effectively computable constant. This reduces the problem to a finite (though extraordinarily large) computation. In the last year, Preda Mihailescu surprised everyone with a strikingly elegant complete proof that 8 and 9 are in fact the only consecutive powers. His proof is very different than that of Tijdeman, depending very little on techniques from transcendental number theory. In these two talks, we will begin by surveying the (vast) literature on Catalan's conjecture and sketch proofs of a number of partial results due to Cassels and Chao Ka, before proceeding with that of Tijdeman. In the second part, we will outline Mihailescu's insights and show how they write the final chapter in a remarkable tale.

His most celebrated work is the fa§ade of the Expiatory Church of the Holy Family. Encyclopedia Gaud i Cornet, Antonio ¤nt´ nyō goudē ē kōr nĕt ) , 1852–1926, Spanish architect. Working mainly in Barcelona, he created startling new architectural forms that paralleled the stylistic development of art nouveau or modernismo. Many of his buildings resemble sculptural configurations; examples are the bizarre structures in the Park G¼ell (1900–1914) and the undulating facades of the Casa Battl³ (1905–7) and the Casa Mil¡ (1905–10). Gaud also introduced color into his facades. Improvising designs from odd bits of material, such as rubble, bricks, and polychrome tiles, he achieved variegated effects, evoking comparisons to abstract expressionism and surrealism. Gaud is as remarkable for his innovations in technology as for his aesthetic audacity. He ingeniously constructed various devices that enabled him to achieve his unusual building shapes; he is particularly admired for his use of the hyperbolic paraboloid form. The Expiatory Church of the Holy Family (begun 1882) represents the height of Gaud's achievements. It was never completed, and work continues on the structure.

Eugene Charles Catalan conjectured in 1844 that the only solution to x^sup m^ - y^sup n^ = 1 in integers x, y, m, n >= 2 is 3^sup 2^ - 2^sup 3^ = 1. Preda Mihailescu (University of Paderborn, Germany), who at age 42 received his doctorate in 1997, appears to have proved the conjecture at last. Surprisingly, it is the newspaper account in Die Welt that gives more mathematical details, comparing the proofs of Catalan's conjecture and Fermat's Last Theorem: For both, the main approach for a hundred years was through Kummer theory, and both problems can lead to Frey elliptic curves. Elliptic curves were the key for FLT but a dead end for Catalan's conjecture; instead, Mihailescu succeeded by going back to Kummer theory.

Antoni Gaud (25 June 1852 - 10 June 1926) was a Catalan architect famous for his unique designs expressing sculptural and individualistic qualities. His works are categorised under the Art Nouveau style of architecture, a precursor to modern architecture. He was born at Reus and educated, and worked all his life in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. His first works were influenced by gothic and Catalan architectural modes but he developed his own distinct sculptural style. In the first years of his career, Gaud was strongly influenced by a French architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc who promoted the return to an evolved form of Gothic architecture. But Gaudi surpassed Viollet-le-Duc, and created buildings and designs that were highly original - irregular, fantastically shaped with intricate patterns. Some of his masterworks, most notably, La Sagrada Famlia have an almost hallucinatory power. He brought the parabolic arch, the organic shapes of nature and underwater fluidity into architecture. While arriving at the form of his buildings he used catenary principle using a scaled model and observing the forces of gravity. He also used the Catalonian trencads technique of broken tiles to decorate surfaces.

    Dr. Eugene S. Martinovsky
"I played quite successfully at school tournaments, but my parents insisted that I first apply myself to my school studies and obtain top grades in school, which I did. "My highest rating in Yugoslavia was the title of a Candidate Master, equivalent to the USA Master's title (2200-2250). I was twice Champion of Macedonia, and twice Champion of Skopje, the Capital of Macedonia. I also played correspondence chess during this time in Yugoslavia. "I graduated from Medical school in 1957 and started my medical career. In 1960 I left Yugoslavia for England and in 1962 I entered the United States. From 1958 to 1965 I did not play much, especially after I came the United States. I concentrated all my efforts on mastering the English Language and Anglo-American medicine, and establishing myself as a doctor and psychiatrist here in America. This required lots of work and study; passing numerous exams was not easy. After I had established myself in the field of psychiatry and getting married and starting a family, I returned to chess again. "Early in 1965, I found myself without any chess books and I didn't even know who the World Champion was at the time. I found a chess club in Chicago through the phone book, and soon became reacquainted with the world of chess (some might call it readdicted). However, I never considered myself a chess professional. My profession was medicine-psychiatry and chess was and still only a very absorbing hobby.
