RATE THIS ARTICLE On Jan. 14, 2005 the Huygens Titan probe began its dramatic plunge through that moon's murky atmosphere having left the Cassini mother ship on December 27, 2004. After a short 2-1/2 hour descent it landed on the surface. It took the combined Cassini-Huygens craft quite a long time to get to this point having left Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida on October 15, 1997. We have become pretty nonchalant about these absolutely spectacular engineering achievements in space like this one, which is reminiscent of hitting the period at the end of this sentence over a 100 meter distance with a dart. It is in fact a phenominal accomplishment especially if you factor in the unbelievably cold temperatures of outer space. To Cassini and Huygens it would have been incredible. Giovanni Domenico Cassini Both Giovanni Domenico Cassini and Christiaan Huygens studied Saturn and her moons during the latter half of the 17th Century. Huygens spotted the first moon, Titan, orbiting Saturn in 1655 and then Cassini found four more (Iapetus in 1671, Rhea in 1672, Tethys in 1684, and Dione in 1684). He also discovered the gap in the ring system of Saturn now known as the Cassini division in 1675.

Giovanni Domenico Cassini (June 8, 1625 - September 14, 1712) was an Italian-French astronomer and engineer. Cassini was born in Perinaldo, Genoa.
Astronomy and astrology
Cassini was an astronomer at the Panzano Observatory, from 1648 to 1669. He was a professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna and became, in 1671, director of the Paris Observatory. He thoroughly adopted his new country, to the extent that he became interchangeably known as Jean-Dominique Cassini.
Along with Hooke, Cassini is given credit for the discovery of the Great Red Spot on Jupiter (~1665). Cassini was the first to observe four of Saturn's moons; he also discovered the Cassini Division (1675). Around 1690, Cassini was the first to observe differential rotation within Jupiter's atmosphere.
In 1672 he sent his colleague Jean Richer to Cayenne, French Guiana, while he himself stayed in Paris. The two made simultaneous observations of Mars and thus found its parallax to determine its distance, thus measuring for the first time the true dimensions of the solar system.
Cassini was the first to make successful measurements of longitude by the method suggested by Galileo, using eclipses of the satellites of Jupiter as a clock.

Together twelve sheets, comprising sets of papers for a terrestial and a celestial globe. Each image c. 32 x 49 cm. Original colour. Each set comprises six sheets, four sheets of gores to make up a globe and two sheets providing the papers for the polar caps and the globe furniture. The contemporary discoveries in the Pacific Ocean are shown in great detail on the terrestial globe, with the courses of Cook’s three voyages delineated. The celestial globe features a particularly decorative projection of the heavens and is attractively coloured, with the constellations shown in their classical forms. Some light soiling to the furniture papers. of the terrestial globe. Overall, attractive sets of these fine engravings.

Giovanni Domenico Cassini studied mathematics and astronomy at the Jesuits and became professor of astronomy at Bologna, as well as fortress builder, at age 25. There, he determined the obliquity of the ecliptic at 23 deg 29' and studied the effects of refraction and the Solar parallax, worked on planetary theory and observed the comets of 1664 and 1668 (according to Kenneth Glyn Jones, also already one in 1652). Also, in 1663, he worked on fortifying the citadel of Urbino.
In 1665, he determined the rotation periods of Jupiter (as 9h 56m) and Mars (24h 40m) with remarkable acuracy, by observing Jupiter's Great Red Spot, discovered by Robert Hooke (1635-1703) in 1664, and moving surface contours on Mars (such as Syrtis Major which Huygens had discovered in 1659). He also observed the phases of Venus, and discovered the oblateness of Jupiter in 1665.

Undoubtedly one of the most important astronomers of the 17th and 18th centuries, Jean-Dominique Cassini became interested in astronomy through his early fascination with astrology.
Cassini was born Giovanni Domenico Cassini in Perinald, Imperia, Italy, on 8 June 1625. Because of his interest in astrology and science, he was employed by a rich amateur astronomer, Marquis Cornelio Malvasia, in Bologna. Here Cassini was able to indulge his passion for the skies using the Marquis’s instruments and he completed his education being taught by Jesuit scientists. Cassini’s work was exceptional in its quality and precision and this was the grounding for later prestigious academic positions. As a young man in his thirties, Cassini then worked for the Bolognese government and also held the chair at the University of Bologna. His early work included observations of the Sun but, as he obtained more powerful telescopes, he became more interested in the planets.

Cassini discovered the Saturnian satellites Lapetus in 1671, Rhea in 1672, and both Tethys and Dione in 1684. In 1675 he discovered what is now known today as the Cassini Division - Saturn's rings are split largely into two parts by a narrow gap and that the rings were in fact swarms of tiny moonlets too small to be seen individually.
