    Giovanni Cassini (1625 A.D.- 1712 A.D.)
Giovanni Cassini was an Italian-French astronomer. In 1650 at the age of 25, he became a professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna. While there, he kept detailed observations of a comet from 1652-53 and again from 1664-65. He also published his findings. In 1669, he was invited to Paris by King Louis XIV, where he later became the director of the Paris Observatory in 1671. Two years later, he became a citizen of France. Cassini was the first to observe Saturn's four moons. He also discovered a gap in the ring system of Saturn, which is now known as the Cassini division. Additionally, he calculated the deformation of Jupiter and its rotation time, watched the phases of Venus and clarified the visible surface marks of Mars. In 1672, he discovered Rhea, which is another one of Saturn's moons. Edmond Halley (1656 A.D.-1742 A.D.)
Edmond Halley was an English astronomer who discovered the proper motion of stars and the periodicity of comets. He was a key figure in the English scientific community at the height of its creativity. As an undergraduate student, he seriously began observing and published a paper on theoretical astronomy. He is primarily known for "A Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets," published in 1705, but also made other significant contributions. From 1676 - 78, Halley catalogued the positions of 350 Southern Hemisphere stars and observed a transit of Mercury. He was convinced that by studying transits of Mercury, as well as future transits of Venus, they could be used to determine the distance of the sun. He worked out a theory of cometary orbits and concluded that the comet of 1682, which still bears his name, was periodic. Additionally, he correctly predicted that this comet would return again in 76 years.

    Giovanni Domenico Cassini
Astronomer, b. at Perinaldo (Nice, Italy), 8 June, 1625; d. at Paris, 14 September, 1712. After two years at Vallebone he entered the Jesuit College at Genoa and studied under Casselli. Coming by chance across some books on astrology, he took up the serious study of astronomy, abandoning his belief in the former pseudo-science. In 1644 the Marquis Malvasia invited him to Bologna, where he was building an observatory. In 1650 he filled the chair of astronomy at the University, left vacant by the death of Cavalleri. Together with the Marquis Tanara he was sent to Pope Alexander VII to plead with Bologna against Ferrara in the dispute over the navigation and the courses of the rivers Reno and Po. His studies in hydraulic engineering procured for him the position of inspector of water and waterways. Later he was appointed by Mario Chigi, the brother of Alexander VII Colbert , the minister of Louis XIV , and after some delay Pope Clement IX Pope Alexander VII he sent a manuscript to the Jesuit Riccioli, a friend and astronomer at Bologna, treating of the Immaculate Conception, and recommending that it be celebrated as a special feast.

He also discovered the moons of Saturn Iapetus Rhea Dione (1684), and Tethys (1684). Cassini discovered that Saturn's rings were divided by a dark gap. He also determined the parallax of Mars which allowed the calculation of the distance to Mars and the Earth Sun distance.

    Cassini, Giovanni Domenico (1625-1712)
An Italian-born French-naturalized astronomer (known also by his Gallicized name, Jean Dominique) who discovered four of Saturn Iapetus Rhea Tethys , and Dione Paris Observatory (1669), found the rotational periods of Mars and Jupiter , one of the polar caps of Mars (1666), and the distance to Mars (1672) by triangulation with the help of observations by Jean Richer. His refinement of the scale of the solar system led to a value of the astronomical unit only 7% short of that accepted today. The improved tables he drew up for Jupiter’s satellites were important in Ole Rømer’s determination of the speed of light. Cassini’s son, Jacques (1677-1756), grandson Cesar Francois (1714-1784), and great-grandson Jean Dominique IV (1748-1845) all became successful astronomers, the first two succeeding the elder Cassini as director of the Paris Observatory.

The first thing we should clarify in this biography is Giovanni Cassini 's name. He was given the name Giovanni Domenico by his parents, Jacopo Cassini and Julia Crovesi, after his birth in Italy. However he also used the name Gian Domenico Cassini, and after he moved to France, he changed his name to the French version of Jean-Dominique Cassini. To add just one more comment to the question of his name, he was the first of the famous Cassini family of astronomers and as such is often known as Cassini I. We know little of his parents but certainly his father was a Tuscan. In fact Giovanni was brought up, not by his parents but by an uncle, a brother of his mother Julia Crovesi. After spending two years being educated at Vallebone, Cassini entered the Jesuit College at Genoa where he studied under Casselli. After this he studied at the abbey of San Fructuoso. Taton writes [1]:- He showed great intellectual curiosity and was especially interested in poetry, mathematics and astronomy.

Italian-born French astronomer who discovered four moons of Saturn and the gap in the rings of Saturn now called the Cassini division.
Cassini was born near Nice (then in Italy). Having assisted two astronomers at an observatory near Bologna, Cassini was made professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna at the age of 25. In 1669 he departed for France at the invitation of King Louis XIV, to construct and run the Paris Observatory. When he went blind 1710, his son Jacques Cassini (1677-1756) succeeded him.
During 1664-67 Cassini determined the rotation periods of Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. In 1675 he distinguished two zones within what was thought to be the single ring around Saturn. Cassini correctly suggested that the rings were composed of myriads of tiny satellites.
In the 1670s Cassini made many observations of details on the lunar surface. He also took advantage of a good opposition of Mars 1672 to determine the distance between the Earth and that planet. He arranged for Jean Richer (1630-1696) to make measurements from his base in Cayenne, on the NE coast of South America, while Cassini made simultaneous measurements in Paris, which permitted them to make a triangulation of Mars. From the result, Cassini was able to deduce many other astronomical distances.

    Giovanni Domenico Cassini (June 8, 1625 - September 14, 1712)
Giovanni Domenico (or, in French, Jean Dominique) Cassini was born on June 8, 1625 in Perinaldo (near Nice, now France). He studied mathematics and astronomy at the Jesuits and became professor of astronomy at Bologna, as well as fortress builder, at age 25. There, he determined the obliquity of the ecliptic at 23 deg 29' and studied the effects of refraction and the Solar parallax, worked on planetary theory and observed the comets of 1664 and 1668 (according to Kenneth Glyn Jones, also already one in 1652). Also, in 1663, he worked on fortifying the citadel of Urbino. In 1665, he determined the rotation periods of Jupiter (as 9h 56m) and Mars (24h 40m) with remarkable acuracy, by observing Jupiter's Great Red Spot, discovered by Robert Hooke (1635-1703) in 1664, and moving surface contours on Mars (such as Syrtis Major which Huygens had discovered in 1659). He also observed the phases of Venus, and discovered the oblateness of Jupiter in 1665. On invitation of the French King, Louis XIV, Cassini moved to Paris where he arrived on April 4, 1669, joined the newly founded

He ordered powerful instruments to Campani (a refractor of diam.10.8cm for example, F/96), discovered a division in Saturn's rings and some of its satellites (Tethys, Dione, Rhea and Japet), observed and tried to understand the zodiacal light.
