An email that I sent to the Number Theory mailing list in Sept 1999 about this photograph contains a brief description of a conversation I had with L. J. Mordell In August 1969 there was a Computers in Number Theory Conference held in Oxford, England. Towards the end a group photograph was taken of most of the participants, and some family members. Was it the day - 21 st August - when L. J. Mordell's book on Diophantine Equations was launched, in Jesus College, by Academic Press? Almost everyone bought a signed copy of Mordell's book, and I still have mine (which is how I know the exact date. I suppose most people bought a copy of the photo, and I have carted mine about with me over the years). I note that the photograph was taken by someone from the company Gillman and Soame (presumably of Oxford). Because of the dimensions of the photo I have had it split into a left and right half (thanks to my colleague Paul Murphy for doing it for me). Many thanks to (in alphabetical order) Paul Bateman (aided by Bruce Berndt and Heini Halberstam), David Boyd, John Brillhart, Michal Bulant, David Cantor, Harvey Cohn (who eventually, in November 99, supplied me with a complete list), Jean Cougnard, Andrew Granville, Peter Pleasants (aided by Nelson Stephens), Daniel Lazard, Odile Lecacheux, Phil Leonard, Keith Matthews, Jim Milne, Hugh Montgomery, Richard Pinch, Eric Reyssat and John Stillwell for contributing identifications. Editorial:
    John Silber should resign
By Peter Cassels Published: Thursday, October 10, 2002 "You find from your own experience a Scoutmaster or Scout leader at camp who puts their arm on some youngster or you watch some Scout who starts making a mark on some other Scout. That has happened so frequently...that they decided...you simply exclude persons of that persuasion on the grounds that if they are not included, then you have less of a worry..."
"It's probably the case that some people have this as a genetic condition, but a very large percentage of people who become homosexual are homosexual because that is the way in which they were first seduced into sex. Not because of anything else. And there's just no reason for us to encourage that."
Those aren't the words of a religious Right zealot or some undereducated poor soul who has never met a gay person. As Bay Windows reported Oct. 3, the comments are those of John Silber, chancellor of Boston University-a world-class institution in a city that's known as the Athens of America because it's a center for education-uttered during a lecture to freshmen and faculty Sept. 20. Silber was responding to outrage over his decision to shut down the Gay/Straight Alliance at B.U. Academy, the prep school the university operates. It's particularly surprising that Silber would make such statements because he had a good and loving relationship with his gay son who died of an AIDS related illness.
