A much modified Georgian Cathedral with Victorian glass and fitttings from 1890, the Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin and St. John the Baptist, John Street, is the oldest building still in continuous use in Sligo Town. The annals of the Four Masters mentions a monastic foundation at the location of the Cathedral in 1245. In 1730, the German architect Richard Cassels came to Ireland to build Hazelwood House for the Wynnes. He was commissioned to design St. John's. The Cathedral was described in 1752 by Pococke - "The church is the design of Mr. Cassels, it is in the form of a cross with galleries at every end, except the east. The roof is a curious piece of work." In the 1800's the church underwent more renovations. The windows were replaced with the gothic style arches. It is from this period that many of the beautiful stained glass windows stem. St. John's contains four memorials to the maternal family of W. B. Yeats. A stained glass window (1901) in memory of his grandparents, a brass communion rail in memory of his uncle, and bronze tablets in memory of his uncle and mother.

Many heroic men and women joined forces with others in a vast network that helped runaway slaves secure freedom. Three groups of people were most active in the Underground Railroad efforts in southern Ohio. They were the Presbyterians, the Quakers, and Free People of Color. These brave people risked the loss of property, money, imprisonment and even death if caught hiding or helping fugitives. Three or four Underground Railroad trails or routes were used by fugitives in Ross County. Trails began at the Ohio River and ended at Lake Erie, though for some, the trail ended in southern Ohio. Fugitives sometimes stayed in African American Settlements in southern Ohio, while others found freedom in Canada. Fugitives crossed the Ohio River at Ripley, Portsmouth, Ironton, Marietta and Gallipolis. Meigs County was another place of many crossings, while some crossed the Ohio at Cincinnati. Fugitives running on the Western Route crossed the Ohio River at Ripley and were often hidden by the residents of the Africa Hill Settlement or by John Rankin, a Presbyterian minister. From there fugitives were conducted to Red Oak (Brown County) to West Union in Adams County. Presbyterian conductors took escaping slaves from West Union to Tranquillity to the home of John T. Wilson and then crossed into Highland County at Sinking Springs.

J. W. S. Cassels
(Redirected from John Cassels John William Scott Cassels (born July 11 ) is a leading British mathematician. His academic career was interrupted in World War II when he was involved in cryptography at Bletchley Park . After the war he became a research student of Louis Mordell , at the University of Cambridge He initially worked on elliptic curves . After a period when he worked on geometry of numbers and diophantine approximation , he returned in the later 1950s to the arithmetic of elliptic curves, writing a series of papers connecting the Selmer group with Galois cohomology and laying some of the foundations of the modern theory of infinite descent . His best-known single result may be the proof that the Tate-Shafarevich group , if it is finite, must have order that is a square; the proof being by construction of an alternating form His mathematical style is mainly as a problem solver, prepared for example to tackle individual

by Charles Murphy
Veteran teachers took shots at their union leadership, complaining their interests weren’t represented as the School Board ratified three year deals with the teachers and classified employees at last Tuesday's meeting.
Eddie Matchett served as a spokesperson for the group of educators who have over 15 years of experience in the district. That group was expected to receive a bubble raise of close to $6,000 this year. Instead the district and union agreed to change some salary steps, which meant those raises would be cut by more than 50 percent.
“I feel betrayed and angry,” Matchett noted.
Matchett said the two sides only looked at numbers and not faces and ignored the contributions veteran teachers have made to the school system.
