Mary Cartwright
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Dame Mary Cartwright was a leading British mathematician of the 20th century. She was born on December 17 in Aynho Northamptonshire where her father was the vicar and died on April 3 in Cambridge England In October she entered St Hugh's College of the Oxford to study mathematics, one of only five women at that university studying the subject. She graduated from Oxford in with a first class degree in Final Honours. She then taught at Alice Ottley School in Worcester and Wycombe Abbey School in Buckinghamshire before returning to Oxford in to read for her D.Phil. She was supervised by G. H. Hardy in her doctoral studies. During the academic year 1928-29 Hardy was at Princeton, so it was E C Titchmarsh who took over the duties as a supervisor. Her thesis on zeros of integral functions was examined by J E Littlewood who she met for the first time as an external examiner in her oral examination for the D.Phil. She could never have guessed on that stressful occasion that she would become a major collaborator with Littlewood over many years.

Rolls correct as at 15 August 2005 Until May 1996 all New Zealand knights and dames were either Knights Bachelor or knights or dames within one of several British Orders of Chivalry. In May 1996 The New Zealand Order of Merit, of five levels, was instituted. The first and second levels of The New Zealand Order of Merit were knighthoods and damehoods. In May 2000 titles within the New Zealand Order of Merit were discontinued and new designations were approved for the first and second levels of the Order. Leaders appeal for green shirt display
Apparel would symbolize unified support for new report on diversity
By Kate Antonacci Published: Thursday, February 3, 2005 In an effort to show support for the report on diversity being presented to the Board of Trustees (BOT) this afternoon, the Notre Dame student government declared today to be "WE ARE ND" T-shirt day. Members of student government hope that students wearing the past season's football shirt, or any other green shirt, today will make a bold statement about student support for the report.
"The initiative is a way to bring together the student body, to prove to the Board of Trustees that the issue of equality on campus is important to many students," said student body vice president, Karla Bell.
This year's football shirt supports the idea of campus unity, which is exactly what the student government was looking for when presenting this report.

Iowa caucus brings attention to student voters
34 ND, Purdue students attend Iowa caucus to work on John Edwards' behalf
By Kate Gales Published: Monday, January 19, 2004
Notre Dame students are voicing strong political opinions as the 2004 campaign opens in Iowa today, reflecting an unusual contingent in an era when a high number of college students and their peers are not registered to vote.
According to the Federal Election Commission, 18- to 24-year-olds have been significantly under-represented in presidential elections. However, many Notre Dame students are registered to vote and are actively following the 2004 campaign. The first caucus takes place in Iowa today, where the College Democrats are currently working on behalf of Sen. John Edwards.
Casey Fitzmaurice, president of the College Democrats, organized the trip to Iowa to support Edwards in association with Nick Smith from Purdue.

A Note on Forms of Address
Forms of address vary slightly between the nations of the Wheel, but they betray their common cultural ancestry. In Pangaturan the situation is slightly different. King Geraint is Your Majesty, and his family Your Royal Highness. Counts and Countesses are addressed as Your Lordship / Ladyship. Heitmen on the mainland are addressed as Sir or Ma'am, elsewhere as Your Lordship / Ladyship. The Domna of Yapen is simply addressed as Domna. Knights are Equester or Lady, and if married the title vests in the partner. Pangaturese knighthoods are never hereditary unless granted on the field of battle. Otherwise as above for Lapang. In the democracies of Sibutan there are no titles, and most citizens glory in the simple title of Master or Mistress. A very few Sibutani retain titles their ancestors held in other realms. Some, furthermore, are honoured by their city with a professional title, such as Master Architect, Mistress Doctor, signifying excellence and rarely awarded before the late stage of a glorious career. Finally there is that over-arching institution the Dramatic Way. The Dramatarch is His Holiness. Hierarchs are His / Her Grace the Lord / Lady Hierarch, although outside the Empire they are usually just called Hierarch X, except those such as the Hierarch Chirurge of Rangar whose title embodies a function and is always referred to thus. Medarchs and Prompters are simply addressed by their title and surname. Introspectors are Fra or Suor in Lapang, Brother and Sister elsewhere, and invariably lose their surnames.

Attack on Gelt Town!
As I write, lurking in an upstairs bedroom at the 'Woolgatherers' Arms', the roar of cannon and crash of falling masonry is all but deafening. The 'Lady Veronica', out of Port Levaca, is bombarding Gelt Town with all the fury at her disposal. What, then, has brought the horrors of war to this sleepy town, basking quietly in northern Yapen? What, but international intrigue and espionage, would be my guess. For the fact is that the local authorities, commanded by King Geraint's agent Major Relf, have rounded up a Sib spy ring based here in the town and at nearby Castle Villus. The spies are currently being held in the Donjon, Gelt Town's fortress, and it is that building which is coming under the most ferocious fire. Willoughby Marsh
Adderbury Playhouse Nears Completion
The daughter of a Salemi vintner, Sakahalin joined the Company of St Aula at the age of fourteen, and had committed herself to a life of Introspection before the Dramatarch summoned her to Palawan after seeing her famous triptych 'The Temptation of St Monksilver' in Galena Auditorium. Though the tremendous size and scope of Sakahalin's works are already famous throughout the world, the Adderbury Playhouse is already said to be her greatest achievement yet.
Medarchs Boiled in Rast
Does this act spell the opening of a new chapter of Lapangi heretic-bashing? If so, it can only give we free folk of Sibutan cause to give thanks to our ancestors who fled the Empire's oppression, and to have pity for those poor unfortunates of the North who seem doomed to labour under its yoke.

James Tattersall and Shawnee McMurran Mary Cartwright (1900-1998) was a British mathematician who made important contributions to the theory of functions and differential equations. G. H. Hardy was her thesis adviser, she collaborated with J. E. Littlewood, and was Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge. Here is an interview, giving some details of her life and times, and some information that does not ordinarily get into print, e.g., "I learned that if Lefschetz stopped asking questions for five minutes he was asleep." Musings of the Masters:
An Anthology of Mathematical Reflections
ed. by Raymond G. Ayoub
Reviewed by Annalisa Crannell
In 1980, Kenneth Boulding (former president of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Economic Association), wrote about the conflict between academic specialization on the on hand, and broad liberal arts inquiry on the other. He noted, "It may well be that the only answer to this problem is redundancy, inefficiency, extravagance, and waste. One could argue indeed that the main reason for getting rich, that is economic development, is that it permits the human race to indulge in these last four delights." [ B ics , we gladly share the lore of the broad intellectual interests of great mathematic ians At the same time, we don't (except in exceedingly rare cases) study these interests directly. Few math students or professors have read Cantor's theology or Galois' political writings. For this reason, I welcomed the chance to get my hands on Ayoub's Musings of the Masters On the one hand, I shouldn't have judged the book by its cover (or its title). The subtitle of the book ("an Anthology of Mathematical Reflections") might be better phrased "an Anthology of Philosophical Reflections on Mathematics". And in spite of the Renaissance-evoking word "Masters" and a jacket that nods to Roman, Greek, and Gothic traditions, each of the seventeen authors included is a twentieth century mathematician. I was sorry to miss out on the likes of Cantor, Galois, and Euler (who after all Dunham names the "Master of us all" [

Although most romantic fiction pictures suttee as voluntary devotion, the fact is that in many parts of India the widows are dragged screaming and tied onto the funeral pyres by sons or other male relatives who wish to avoid sharing the man’s wealth. Even those women who voluntarily mount the funeral pyre were usually drugged or tied to prevent them from trying to escape once the flames reach them. The women were ideally always alive when the pyres were lit.
