Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll is the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was born on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children; his father was a clergyman in the Church of England. From a very early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and marionette shows, and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. In 1846 he entered Rugby School, and in 1854 he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. He was successful in his study of mathematics and writing, and remained at the college after graduation to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879), and Curiosa Mathematica While teaching, Carroll was ordained as a deacon; however, he never preached. He also began to pursue photography, often choosing children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean at Christ Church, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned both photography and public speaking between 1880 and 1881, and focused on his writing. Carroll published his novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, followed by

The Hunting of the Snark

Through the Looking-Glass

Lewis Carroll, the celebrated British mathematician and writer was born as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on 27 January 1832. His most famous works include the classic children’s books “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) and its sequel “Through the Looking Glass” (1875).
Lewis Carroll was fascinated by mathematics since his early childhood. As a child he also showed keen interest in writing and parody.
Lewis Carroll received Bachelor of Arts, 1st Class Honours in Mathematics, 2nd Class Honours in Classics in 1854, and Master of Arts in 1857.
Carroll’s best-know work "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was published in July 1865 and was reprinted later the same year, due to the poor quality of the first edition.
The sequel of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" called "Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice Found There" followed in December 1871. The "The Hunting of the Snark" was published in March 1876. The original manuscript of "Alice's Adventures Under Ground" was published in 1886. Lewis Carroll died at Guildford on the 14th of January 1898.

Cripps considers data relating to three topics in this article: Carroll's knowledge of and interest in Kingsley and his works; Carroll's friendship with Henry Kingsley; and the parallels between The Water-Babies and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. With respect to the parallels, Cripps cautions about talking of influences, declaring that it is quite likely that two authors, themselves the product of similar backgrounds, should sometimes use the same ideas when composing a children's story. The artwork sprinkled on these pages is drawn from several sources, including textbooks, children's books and comic strips. Some effort was done to create a bit of ambience and relevance to the material of the page. With apologies to the authors of some of the artwork, the colorizations are by me.
The Pogo Collection
Pogo Possum , the DCnet mascot (left), carries a bag of tools used to repair Unix kernels, and a bug in his hat, which is a hazard in much of the work we do. "We have met the enemy and he is us" is probably the most famous line from the Pogo comic strips and books published by Walt Kelly (right) [6]. The mugshots scattered over these pages were taken from his books [4-11], some of which are now valuable collectors items. The workstations, routers and other Internet munchkins that lurk in the DCnet swamp are named after his critters.
