The view of the world in the early 1800's was very different from our view today. Dalton's atomic theory was brand new; Laviosier's experiments had just put the phlogiston theory to rest; and every educated person knew that heat was due to a mysterious fluid called caloric Into this world was born a quiet man named Sadi Carnot. His life was short and undistingished. His only mark was a small monograph entitled Reflections on the Motive Power of Heat and on Machinery Appropriate for Developing this Power. It was not at all a best seller, but the ideas it contained eventually changed the world. Who was this peculiar fellow? He was born in 1796, the son of a very famous man, Lazare Carnot, a military engineer who had become a member of the ruling Directory during the first stages of the French Revolution and so one of the most powerful men in France. He was a strong anti-monarchist, a view he held all his life. His first child was born during this time. He was named Nicholas Leonhard Sadi Carnot, called Sadi for short. Lazare Carnot, already famous for a book he wrote on fortifications, was given the job of reorganizing the Revolutionary army and making it into a force that could repel the Allied invaders anxious to restore the monarchy. This army was the superb fighting tool later used by Napoleon.

Click here for audio of Episode 1958. Today, meet Lazare and Sadi Carnot. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. L azare Carnot was a remarkable eighteenth century figure, even though his son and grandson are better known. Son Sadi Carnot led us to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Grandson Sadi Carnot became President of France. Born in 1753, Lazare studied math and military engineering. During several years of lackluster military service, he competed for math prizes and became involved with brewing French Revolution politics. Then he got himself thrown in jail for an overzealous affair with an aristocrat's daughter. He might've languished there but, as the Revolution began, he was pulled from prison, back into service. Seven years later, he was made a member of the five-man Directory that now ruled post-revolutionary France. In that role, Carnot started Napoleon's rapid rise by giving him charge of an Army. As long as Napoleon reigned, Carnot did high-level government work. But afterward, the returning monarchy remembered Carnot's vote to behead the king. So he had to spend the rest of his life exiled in Germany.

Sadi Carnot and the Conservation of Energy
Vince Ciricola
Sadi Carnot was a proponent of the caloric theory, as were nearly all of the prominent figures prior to Joule. He never published anything that varied from that view although he may have indicated otherwise in some of his correspondence. It is interesting to note that Sadi Carnot and Emil Clapeyron were both engineers (Joule was not an engineer). Together they established the foundation on which the science of thermodynamics was built, primarily by physicists. Carnot is one of the few engineers in history who has name recognition. Emil Clapeyron rescued Carnot's paper from almost certain obscurity; he is responsible for the graphical depiction of this cycle familiar to all thermodynamic students and the equations associated with it . It is a testimony to Carnot that despite an incorrect notion on the nature of heat the Carnot Cycle/Engine is an indispensable part of virtually all college thermodynamic courses.

Related Category: Physics, Biographies Nicolas LEonard Sadi Carnot [n E k O A E O Pronunciation Key REflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu, 1824) is concerned with the relation between heat and mechanical energy. Carnot devised an ideal engine in which a gas is allowed to expand to do work, absorbing heat in the process, and is expanded again without transfer of heat but with a temperature drop. The gas is then compressed, heat being given off, and finally it is returned to its original condition by another compression, accompanied by a rise in temperature. This series of operations, known as Carnot's cycle, shows that even under ideal conditions a heat engine cannot convert into mechanical energy all the heat energy supplied to it; some of the heat energy must be rejected. This is an illustration of the second law of thermodynamics. Carnot's work anticipated that of Joule, Kelvin, and others.

Eldest son of Lazare Carnot , Sadi worked on the mathematical theory of heat and helped start the modern theory of thermodynamics. In 1824 he published the only work during his lifetime which includes his description of the Carnot cycle. This work only became well known after Clapeyron published an analytic reformulation in 1834. It was incorporated into the thermodynamic theory of Clausius and Thomson

    Parigi, 1Giugno 1796 - Parigi, 24 Agosto1832
