Encyclopedia Carnot, Lazare Nicolas Marguerite l¤z¤r nēk´l¤ m¤rgərēt k¤rnō ) , 1753–1823, French revolutionary, known as the organizer of victory for his role in the French Revolutionary Wars . A military engineer by training, Carnot became the military genius of the Revolution and was chiefly responsible for the success of the French in the wars. A member of the Legislative Assembly, the Convention, and the Committee of Public Safety, he made himself almost indispensable through his military knowledge. After the fall of Maximilien Robespierre, who was primarily responsible for the Reign of Terror, Carnot managed to avoid punishment for his own part in the Terror and became a member of the Directory . He was ousted from the Directory in the coup of 18 Fructidor (Sept., 1797) and fled abroad. He returned in 1799 and served as minister of war (1800) and in the tribunate under Napoleon Bonaparte (

by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 1958. Today, meet Lazare and Sadi Carnot. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. L azare Carnot was a remarkable eighteenth century figure, even though his son and grandson are better known. Son Sadi Carnot led us to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Grandson Sadi Carnot became President of France. Born in 1753, Lazare studied math and military engineering. During several years of lackluster military service, he competed for math prizes and became involved with brewing French Revolution politics. Then he got himself thrown in jail for an overzealous affair with an aristocrat's daughter. He might've languished there but, as the Revolution began, he was pulled from prison, back into service. Seven years later, he was made a member of the five-man Directory that now ruled post-revolutionary France. In that role, Carnot started Napoleon's rapid rise by giving him charge of an Army. As long as Napoleon reigned, Carnot did high-level government work. But afterward, the returning monarchy remembered Carnot's vote to behead the king. So he had to spend the rest of his life exiled in Germany.

Lazare Carnot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Lazare Carnot Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot Nolay May 13 Magdeburg August 22 ) was a French politician and mathematician . He is best know for his role as "Organizer of Victory" in the French Revolutionary Wars Born at Nolay , he was educated in Burgundy , and obtained a commission in the engineer corps of the Prince de Cond© . Although in the army, he continued his mathematical studies in which he felt great interest. His first work, published in , was on machines ; it contains a statement which foreshadows the principle of energy as applied to a falling weight, and the earliest proof of the fact that kinetic energy is lost in the collision of imperfectly elastic bodies. On the outbreak of the French Revolution in , Carnot threw himself into politics. He became a delegate to the National Convention in , and in he was elected to the Committee of Public Safety , and the victories of the French army were largely due to his powers of organization and enforcing discipline, both in the actual theatre of operations and in obtaining fresh recruits by compulsion: the levee en masse , which amounted to a one-off conscription . It added significantly to discontent with the course of the Revolution in more conservative areas — such as the Vendee , which broke out in open revolt — but the government of the time considered it a success, and Carnot became known as the "Organizer of Victory."

SCHEDE BIOGRAFICHE
PERSONAGGI CARNOT LAZARE-NICOLA-MARGUERITE Carnot, Lazare-Nicolas-Marguerite
(Nolay, Côte-d'Or 1753 - Magdeburgo, Germania 1823)
Uomo politico e ingegnere militare francese.
