Introdujo en su país el idealismo alemán como base intelectual para un severo ataque al materialismo y al utilitarismo imperantes tras el triunfo de la «revolución industrial» (por ejemplo en Pasado y presente, de 1843, donde resalta el contraste entre el mundo moderno y una idealizada comunidad religiosa de la Edad Media). John Stuart Mill le animó a escribir La Revolución francesa (1837), que sería su principal trabajo histórico: rechazando la mera narración objetiva de acontecimientos, optó por una historiografía apasionada, en la que el autor transmitiera el «espíritu» de la época; el resultado fue brillante gracias a las cualidades literarias de Carlyle, que consiguió un libro animado y convincente. Su visión de la historia y de la literatura le llevó a centrarse en la figura del héroe (1841) y a estudiar a dos de ellos: Cromwell (1845) y Federico el Grande (1865). Al defender la necesidad de un liderazgo heroico frente a las tendencias democráticas e igualitarias de su tiempo, Carlyle ha sido interpretado a veces como valedor intelectual de las dictaduras.
