Cardano, Girolamo
Girolamo Cardano was born on September 24, 1501 in the city of Pavia, in what is now Italy. Without a doubt, he is one of the most colorful characters in the early history of probability. Cardano's early training in mathematics probably came from his father, who was a lawyer by trade, but evidently an accomplished mathematician as well. Later, Cadano was educated at the universities of Pavia and Padua. He received a doctoral degree in medicine in 1525. Cardano was a man of many interests and professions, including: law, medicine, astrology, and mathematics. Cardano published The Practice of Arithmetic and Simple Mensuration in 1537. The mathematical work that he is best known for, Ars Magna (The Great Art) was published in 1545. This book contains a variety of methods for solving polynomial equations, and anticipates the discovery of complex numbers. Additionally, Cardano wrote two encyclopedias of natural science. He achieved extraordinary fame as a physician, and indeed was considered one of the foremost scientists in Europe. However, Cardano was also an avid and at times compulsive gambler, who squandered a significant part of his life and fortune on games of chance. On the positive side, his interest in gambling led to his mathematical study of probability. Cardano's book

Girolamo or Hieronimo Cardano 's name was Hieronymus Cardanus in Latin and he is sometimes known by the English version of his name Jerome Cardan. Girolamo Cardano was the illegitimate child of Fazio Cardano and Chiara Micheria. His father was a lawyer in Milan but his expertise in mathematics was such that he was consulted by Leonardo da Vinci on questions of geometry. In addition to his law practice, Fazio lectured on geometry, both at the University of Pavia and, for a longer spell, at the Piatti foundation in Milan. When he was in his fifties, Fazio met Chiara Micheria, who was a young widow in her thirties, struggling to raise three children. Chiara became pregnant but, before she was due to give birth, the plague hit Milan and she was persuaded to leave the city for the relative safety of nearby Pavia to stay with wealthy friends of Fazio. Thus Cardan was born in Pavia but his mother's joy was short lived when she received news that her first three children had died of the plague in Milan. Chiara lived apart from Fazio for many years but, later in life, they did marry. Cardan at first became his father's assistant but he was a sickly child and Fazio had to get help from two nephews when the work became too much for Cardan. However, Cardan began to wish for greater things than an assistant to his father. Fazio had taught his son mathematics and Cardan began to think of an academic career. After an argument, Fazio allowed Cardan to go university and he entered Pavia University, where his father had studied, to read medicine despite his father's wish that he should study law.

Cardano, Girolamo (1501-1570)
A celebrated Renaissance mathematician, physician, astrologer, and gambler, whose writings on the use of negative numbers are the earliest known in Europe. As a physician, he gave one of the first clinical descriptions of typhoid fever. The illegitimate child of a mathematically gifted lawyer who was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci, he entered the University of Pavia in 1520 and later studied medicine at Padua. His eccentric and confrontational style earned him few friends and he had trouble finding work. Eventually, he won reputation as a physician and his services were highly valued at the courts. Today, Cardano is mostly remembered for his achievements in algebra . He published the solutions to the cubic and quartic equations in his book Ars magna (1545). The solution to the cubic was communicated to him by Niccolo

Olasz matematikus, fizikus, korának neves orvosa volt. Törvénytelen születésû gyermekként a nyomorból jutott el a világhírig. Az akkori kor szinte minden tudományával foglalkozott. Nevét õrzi az ismert gépkocsi alkatrész, a kardán-tengely is.

idejében a matematikusok különösen nagy erõfeszítést tettek, hogy a másodfokú egyenlet megoldóképlet éhez hasonlóan megtalálják a harmadfokú egyenletek megoldó képletét is.

CARDANO, GIROLAMO (1501 - 1576). Artis magnae sive de regulis algebrae liber unus . Nuremberg: 1545. Cardano's Ars Magna, the first great Latin treatise devoted solely to algebra, appeared at Nuremberg in 1545 and set forth the theory of algebraic equations so far as it was then known. It includes the solution of the cubic, which he seems to have secured from Tartaglia under pledge of secrecy and then dishonorably to have published, and the solution of the biquadratic which had been discovered by his pupil Ferrari.

Cardano was an Italian physician, mathematician, and astrologer. This first edition of his three most important works on mathematical mechanics and cubic equations is considered by some scholars as the most important work on advanced mathematics published in the sixteenth century. The folio includes many woodcut diagrams. Purchased through the generosity of the University of Illinois Library Friends at Urbana-Champaign.
