    Christiaan Huygens
Born: 14 April 1629 in The Hague, Netherlands
Died: 8 July 1695 in The Hague, Netherlands
In 1656 Christiaan Huygens patented the first pendulum clock, which greatly increased the accuracy of time measurement. Christiaan Huygens came from an important Dutch family. His father Constantin Huygens had studied natural philosophy and was a diplomat. It was through him that Christiaan was to gain access to the top scientific circles of the times. In particular Constantin had many contacts in England and corresponded regularly with Mersenne and was a friend of Descartes. Tutored at home by private teachers until he was 16 years old, Christiaan learned geometry, how to make mechanical models and social skills such as playing the lute. His mathematical education was clearly influenced by Descartes who was an occasional visitor at the Huygens' home and took a great interest in the mathematical progress of the young Christiaan. Christiaan Huygens studied law and mathematics at the University of Leiden from 1645 until 1647. Van Schooten tutored him in mathematics while he was in Leiden. From 1647 until 1649 he continued to study law and mathematics but now at the College of Orange at Breda. Here he was fortunate to have another skilled teacher of mathematics, John Pell. Through his father's contact with Mersenne, a correspondence between Huygens and Mersenne began around this time. Mersenne challenged Huygens to solve a number of problems including the shape of the rope supported from its ends. Although he failed at this problem he did solve the related problem of how to hang weights on the rope so that it hung in a parabolic shape.

By Griet Christiaens The Prince of Amateurs of Mathematics The Background of Pierre de Fermat Fermat was baptized on August 20, 1601 (this is accepted as his date of birth in both mathematical and historical communities) in the town of Beaumont-de-Lomagne, France, near Montauban. He was born into a Catholic family as one of four children; three boys and one girl. His father was a prosperous leather merchant and the second consul of his hometown, and his mother, a parliamentary noblesse de la robe. It is easy to see that they were well-to-do. His uncle, who was his godfather, was also a merchant.
He began his secondary schooling at the convent of Cordeliers, an institution run by Franciscans in France. After that it is believed that he may have attended the University of Toulouse. He acquired his degree of Bachelor of Civil Laws from the University of Orleans in 1631.
Frequently Fermat socialized with Carcavi, Mersenne, Blaise Pascal,Wallis, Digby and many other great discoverers of his time. He communicated with all the great mathematicians in Europe, posing and solving problems, disseminating ideas of various math subjects and inventing new mathematics such as probability theory . French Mathematician

Pierre Fermat's father was a wealthy leather merchant and second consul of Beaumont- de- Lomagne. He was probably educated in his early years at the local Franciscan monastery. He attended the University of Toulouse before moving to Bordeau in the second half of the 1620s. In Bordeau he began his first serious mathematical researches and in 1629 he had completed his restoration of Apollonius's "Plane Loci." In Bordeau he was in contact with Beaugrand and produced important work on maxima and minima. From Bordeau Fermat went to Orléans where he studied law at the University. He received a degree in civil law and he purchased the offices of councillor at the parliament in Toulouse. Fermat's meteoric rise through the government is evidenced by his multiple appointments between 1631 and 1653. News of his death due to the plague of the 1650s was exaggerated: I informed you earlier of the death of Fermat. He is alive, and we no longer fear for his health, even though we had counted him among the dead a short time ago. The following report, made to Colbert the leading figure in France at the time, has a ring of truth:-

Pierre de Fermat Piere de Fermat was a son of a wealthy French leather merchant. He was born in Lomangne in 1601 and he had one brother and two sisters. His education was never really known. It is assumed he either went to a local monastery or was home schooled. It is known that he attended the University of Toulouse and later moved to Bordeaux. Bordeaux was the first place where Fermat practices mathematics but he went on to study law at the university of Orleans. In 1631 Pierre Fermat received a degree in civil law and also became a government official. Because of his new title he was entitled to change his name to Pierre de Fermat. Pierre spent the remainder of his life in Toulouse, his career in law would continue to grow and by 1652 at the age of 51, he was promoted to the highest level of the criminal court. None the less, Fermat never gave up on his interest in mathematics and had a few friends that he met through his hobby like Beaugrand and Carcavi. Fermat was an amateur mathematician; he never wrote any books or published any of his discoveries. He was more interested in sharing his information with others and learning instead of teaching. One of his most remembered pieces of work was written in the margin of the book Arithmetica written by Diophantus. The theory became known as Fermat’s last theorem. The theorem states

The French mathematician Pierre de Fermat(1601-1665) was possibly the most productive mathematician of his era, making many contributions, some of which were to calculus, number theory, and the law of refraction. We will survey those contributions here, paying particular attention to his work in number theory. While relatively little is known of Fermat's early education, it is known that he was of Basque origin and received his primary and secondary education at the monastery of Grandsl ve, run by the Cordeliers (Franciscans), in Beaumont-de-Lomagne. For his advanced studies he first attended the University of Toulouse before moving to Bordeaux in the second half of the 1620's. In Bordeaux (1629) Fermat began his first serious mathematical researches, where he gave a copy of his restoration of Appollonius's Plane Loci to one of the mathematicians there. In Bordeaux he contacted Beaugrand and during this time he produced work on maxima and minima. He gave his work to Etienne de'Espagnet, who shared mathematical interests with Fermat.
"Fermat's offices made him a member of that social class also and entitled him to add the "de" to his name, which he did from 1631 on." (Mahoney, p.16)

Cardano had proceeded from a series of experiments to some important generalizations, but he was interested only in developing a theory of gambling, not a theory of probability. Galileo was not even interested in developing a theory of gambling. The story of the three Frenchmen begins with an unlikely trio who saw beyond the gaming tables and fashioned the systematic and theoretical foundations for measuring probability. The first, Blaise Pascal, was a brilliant young dissolute who subsequently became a religious zealot and ended up rejecting the use of reason. The second, Pierre de Fermat, was a successful lawyer for whom mathematics was a sideline. The third member of the group was a nobleman, the Chevalier de Méré, who combined his taste for mathematics with an irresistible urge to play games of chance; his fame rests simply on his having posed the question that set the other two on the road to discovery.
