He was also an innovator in projective geometry and an early investigator of topology Gauss Textbook of Statics , which is actually a discovery of Johann Benedict Listing, he did introduce the notion of orientability, which allowed him to put a minus sign in front of lengths, areas, and volumes. Furthermore, the well-known strip which carries his name is not the only one-sided surface that he considered; he described a whole class of polyhedra with this property, which he called extraordinary . They all have volume zero, and violate Euler's polyhedral formula. The smallest has 10 triangular faces, 15 edges, and 6 vertices. The notion of the dual polyhedron barycentric coordinates to identify points in the projective plane attracted the attention of the whole mathematical community. 1) Answering to Julio Gonzalez Cabillon, I maintain the 1491's be considered
as a second edition. Julio was saying:
*In his masterpiece, Moritz Cantor remarks that already in 1482 there
were two editions of the "Elements", which differed only on the first
page. To our knowledge, the reason for this second version is unknown.*
What Julio and (may be) Cantor call "second edition" is a second issue of
the first (i.e. first edition with second state of the first page). This is
not playing with words.
And to my knowledge, there is no other edition since 1491.
2) The 1491 edition is in Vincenze all right and not in Venice as I misplaced it, due to homophony, and heat.

    Description

This book contains around 80 articles on major writings in mathematics published between 1640 and 1940. All aspects of mathematics are covered: pure and applied, probability and statistics, foundations and philosophy. Sometimes two writings from the same period and the same subject are taken together. The biography of the author(s) is recorded, and the circumstances of the preparation of the writing are given. When the writing is of some lengths an analytical table of its contents is supplied. The contents of the writing is reviewed, and its impact described, at least for the immediate decades. Each article ends with a bibliography of primary and secondary items.
    Audience
Mathematicians, Statisticians, Historians of science, Logicians and Philosophers.

    A KAHUN MATHEMATICAL FRAGMENT
    John A.R. Legon
[Based on the author's article in Discussions in Egyptology 24 (1992), p.21-24]
Among the various papyri discovered by Flinders Petrie in the Middle Kingdom town of El-Lahun (Kahun) were found some fragments dealing with mathematical problems, some of which were understood at the time by F.L. Griffith [1], while others were explained by Schack-Schackenburg [2]. The problem represented by columns 11 and 12 of Kahun fragment IV.3, however, was not fully understood, and much confusion has resulted from the analysis by R.J. Gillings [3]. In the present article we will show that contrary to Gillings' view, the text contains a straightforward and complete example of the Egyptian method of calculating an arithmetical progression. The significance of the numbers written in hieratic in column 12 of the fragment (see fig, 1) was in fact first recognised by Moritz Cantor [4], who noticed that
these numbers form the ten terms of an arithmetical progression with a common difference between the terms of 2/3 + 1/6 (or "3 '6 to use the notation of fig. 2)
