Open Questions The final problem which Cantor grappled with was the realization that there could be no set containing everything, since, given any set, there is always a larger set its set of subsets. Furthermore, he believes that infinity actually exists - it is not just a mathematical construct. Cantor came to the conclusion that the Absolute was beyond man's reach, and identified this concept with God. Subsequently, he believed that he is doing theology by introducing transfinite numbers into mathematics. Here are some quotes by Georg Cantor: I have never proceeded from any 'Genus supremum' of the actual infinite. Quite the contrary, I have rigorously proved that there is absolutely no "Genus supremum' of the actual infinite. What surpasses all that is finite and transfinite is no 'Genus'; it is the single, completely individual unity in which everything is included, which includes the Absolute, incomprehensible to the human understanding. This is the Actus Purissimus, which by many is called God. I am so in favor of the actual infinite that instead of admitting that Nature abhors it, as is commonly said, I hold that Nature makes frequent use of it everywhere, in order to show more effectively the perfections of its Author. Thus I believe that there is no part of matter which is not - I do not say divisible - but actually divisible; and consequently the least particle ought to be considered as a world full of an infinity of different creatures.

He based all of his geometrical theorems on just five postulates, making the work very rigorous and complete, but for two millenia mathematicians wondered if the fifth postulate (the so-called "Parallel Postulate") could in fact be derived from the other four. This was finally answered (in the negative) by Lobachevsky, Bolyai, and Gauss, leading to the branch of mathematics we now call Non-Euclidean Geometry More...

Georg Cantor (1845-1918)
the Theory of Infinite Sets
In the years 1871-1884 Georg Cantor invented the theory of infinite sets. In the process Cantor constructed a set that is self-similar at all scales. Magnifying a portion of the set reveals a piece that looks like the entire set itself.
To construct this set, take a line and remove the middle third. There are two line segments left. Take the remaining two pieces and remove their middle thirds. Repeat this process an infinite number of times. The resulting collection of points is called a "Cantor" set
The Cantor set is an unusual object. The deletion process produces an infinite set of points. On the one hand, the points are more numerous-more "infinite"-than the integers, since you can't count them. On the other hand, the Cantor set is not a continuum of points like the original whole line. The Cantor set is somewhere in between. The points in the Cantor set are quite close together. Pick any point and you can find another point that is arbitrarily close to it.
At the time Cantor discovered these "pathological" sets-to repeat a phrase used at the time-it was widely believed that they were the purest form of mathematical invention. Never would they be seen in the natural world.

His Mathematics and Philosophy of the Infinite
Joseph Warren Dauben

Reviews One of the greatest revolutions in mathematics occurred when Georg Cantor (1845-1918) promulgated his theory of transfinite sets. This revolution is the subject of Joseph Dauben's important studythe most thorough yet writtenof the philosopher and mathematician who was once called a "corrupter of youth" for an innovation that is now a vital component of elementary school curricula. Set theory has been widely adopted in mathematics and philosophy, but the controversy surrounding it at the turn of the century remains of great interest. Cantor's own faith in his theory was partly theological. His religious beliefs led him to expect paradoxes in any concept of the infinite, and he always retained his belief in the utter veracity of transfinite set theory. Later in his life, he was troubled by recurring attacks of severe depression. Dauben shows that these played an integral part in his understanding and defense of set theory. Review: "Historians of mathematics can only be grateful for the effort Professor Dauben has expended to create the synthesis of Cantor scholarship found in this book. But the book can, and I hope will, be read with profit by a far more extensive audience. Any student, mathematician, philosopher, theologian, or general historian with an interest in Georg Cantor and the wondrous revolution in mathematical and philosophical thought that his work did so much to precipitate will find this book of considerable interest."Thomas Hawkins
