John Douglas Sutherland Campbell
(9th Duke of Argyll) Politician and statesman. Born in London, Campbell was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Eton and the Universities of St. Andrews and Cambridge. He became Member of Parliament for Argyllshire (1868-71 and 1895-1900). Campbell married Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848 - 1939), a daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1871. He became Canada's youngest Governor-General in 1878, serving in this position until 1883. The couple made lasting contributions to Canadian society, especially encouraging the arts and sciences, promoting the creation of various institutions such as the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Royal Society of Canada and the National Gallery of Canada. Campbell served as Governor of Windsor Castle (1892 - 1914) and succeeded his father to the Dukedom of Argyll in 1900. The couple lived mainly at Kensington Palace (London), although their marriage was unhappy and gave rise to no children. He died on the Isle of Wight and was succeeded by his nephew.

The 1940s saw a great wave of science fiction writers, the first to grow up reading the pulps and then writing stories of their own. Astounding, now entering its 70th year of publishing under the name Analog, was at the heart of this explosion of writers, and John W. Campbell, Jr. was the heart of Astounding Campbell started out as a writer, making his debut in 1930 with the short story, "When the Atoms Failed". He was only 20 at the time, but before long he was second only to E. E. "Doc" Smith as a smasher of galaxies. However, while Campbell was a solid science fiction writer, he was born to be an editor. He took over Astounding at the end of 1937, and within three months it was unquestionably his magazine. Images

John Campbell 's father was also named John Campbell. He was a medical doctor who had a practice in Lisburn. John junior, the subject of this biography, was educated at home when he was young. He then entered the Methodist College in Belfast where he completed his school education before entering Queen's College, Belfast. The Queen's University in Belfast had been established in 1845 and Campbell felt great loyalty towards this institution. As Elliott writes in [2]:- He always remained a very loyal Ulsterman, in every sense, and expressed warm gratitude to those under whom he studied in his first university. Campbell graduated from the Queen's University in 1884 and won a scholarship to study at the University of Oxford in England. He entered Hertford College, at that time a new College which had been founded in Oxford in 1874. He graduated in 1885 winning a Junior Mathematical University Scholarship in that year. He became a fellow of Hertford College in 1887, being awarded a Senior Scholarship in 1888, and was then appointed as a tutor at the College. He later was appointed as a lecturer at University College. As to his success as a lecturer in Oxford Elliott , in [2], gives the following details:-

JOHN CAMPBELL .............. BIOGRAPHY .............. Campbell, John [4th Earl of Loudoun] (1705-1782) Commander-in-Chief of British forces in North America: Loudoun came to North America in 1756 to command troops in the French and Indian War. Expecting the colonists to pay for the war under his direction, he was surprised to find the Americans concerned about rights. The colonists were reluctant to fund the British war being fought in North America, and were clear about their opinions. Loudoun then changed the emphasis of his strategy, depending on troops organized and trained in England, and funded by English taxpayers. Insufficient support and encouragement from the British Government, the colonial assemblies, and the weather made it impossible for him to mount an offensive. Although he was less than successful militarily, Loudoun left behind a regular army that was well prepared to conquer Canada.
