Euclid's Elements in the middle ages
Euclid's Elements played an important role in the Middle Ages, rivalled in the legacy of Greek science to the period perhaps only by Ptolemy's Almagest . This was probably largely due to the emphasis on logic in later medieval education. For a long time, Euclid's text was represented only by the fragments reputed to have originated in a translation by the late Roman philosopher Boethius. And during these early years it is almost certain that its true significance was not appreciated. But in the twelfth century it was introduced in its complete form along with other remnants of Greek science through the medium of translations from the Arabic. There seem to have been a very small number of independent translations, but the first six books of the Elements became part of the basic curriculum of that time, and copies spread throughout Europe. Many manuscripts from this period are still to be found among collections today. Most are rather drab productions when compared to the fancier manuscripts of that time, but some have been illuminated and are in places quite beautiful. Almost all include geometrical diagrams - some familiar to us from modern editions, but some in a tradition of their own. Microfilm copies of some are available in a few university collections. Much of what we know about Euclid's Elements and the extant manuscripts from this period is discussed in the following paper by Dr. Menso Folkerts

Johannes Campanus was chaplain to Pope Urban IV and quoted by Bacon as one of the four greatest contemporary mathematicians. He published a Latin edition of Euclid 's Elements in 15 books and it was the standard Euclid for 200 years. Most of Campanus's other writings were on astronomy. He wrote Theorica Planetarum which describes the construction of a planetarium, the first to be described by a European. The work also contains detailed descriptions of the longitude of the planets as well as a geometrical description of the motion of the model. Data for the planets was taken from the Almagest and from the Toledan Tables edited by the Arabian astronomer Azarquiel in 1080 based on his own work and that of al-Khwarizmi and al-Battani . Campanus determined the time of each planet's retrograde motion and gave precise instructions on using the tables. He also made calculations in great detail of the distances to the planets and their sizes. Campanus also wrote Tractatus de Sphaera as well as De Computo Ecclesiastico and Calendarium.

Dear Colleagues,
It seems apparent that anyone with an *earnest* interest in the prehistory,
history, and reception of non-Archimedean mathematics should take a close
look at the controversial and juicy history of HORN ANGLES.
This concept loosely defined as the configuration formed by two curves
starting at a point, called the vertex, in a common direction - is also found
in the literature with colorful names such as
o angle of contingence
o curvilinear angle
o angle of contact o cornicular angle o horn-shape angle o horn-like angle o horned angle

The Chaucer Review

[Access article in PDF]
Jennifer Arch Fifty years have passed since Derek J. Price published his edition of the Equatorie of the Planetis , a Middle English treatise in Cambridge, Cambridge University Library, Peterhouse MS 75.1, which describes how to build and use a planetary equatorium. Yet there remains some question as to whether this treatise should be included in the Chaucer canon. In his edition Price made what is still the most persuasive case for Chaucer's authorship of the treatise, and he established the terms in which the discussion has been conducted ever since. For example, he argued that the notation "deffe a x a chaucer," on fol. 5v, was the phrase "differentia Christi et Radix Chaucer," or, as he translated it, the "difference (in number of days) between (the year of) Christ and the (year of the) radix of Chaucer."

Euclid's Geometry
France: c. 1480
Sp Coll MS Gen. 1115
This month's book has been chosen as one of the items to be displayed on Friday 15 June in the exhibition Information Services through the Ages organized by the Library Special Collections Department and the University Archive Services as part of the Information Services Open Day. It is a fifteenth century manuscript of Euclid's Elements in Latin with other texts mainly on geometry.
front flyleaf: early pressmarks Glasgow University was founded in 1451. Although we do not know for sure, this manuscript was possibly used in early teaching at the University. Certainly, it is a typical example of the kind of textbook that would have been used as part of the medieval curriculum. While there is no record of how the manuscript was acquired by the Library, it does bear early University press marks on the front flyleaf: Ff.3. n.5, and another earlier Glasgow mark, now crossed out and obscured, but possibly beginning with a 'G'.
folio 8r: beginning of Euclid's elements The main item in the manuscript (folios 8-172v) is a copy of Euclid's Elements , translated out of Arabic into Latin by the English scholastic philosopher Adelard of Bath. Its colophon states that it was finished being written out on 4 December 1480. This manuscript copy therefore predates the first printed edition, produced in Venice by Erhard Ratdolt in 1482, by just two years.
