Cajori, Florian
Swiss-born US historian of mathematics. His books dealt with the history of both elementary and advanced mathematics, as well as the teaching of mathematics. His two-volume History of Mathematical Notations 1928-29 is a standard reference text. He also wrote biographies of eminent mathematicians.
Cajori's influence on the modern perception of the development of mathematics was profound, and his works are frequently quoted to this day. His reputation is founded mainly on his many books on the history of mathematics, although a number of his works - notably his edited version of Isaac Newton 's Principia (published posthumously) - have been subject to some criticism for their interpretation of historical material. He also compiled A History of Physics 1899.

Plus (+) and minus (-). Nicole d' Oresme (1323-1382) may have used a figure which looks like a plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et (meaning "and") in Algorismus proportionum, believed to have been written between 1356 and 1361. The symbol appears in a manuscript of this work believed to have been written in the fourteenth century, but perhaps by a copyist and not Oresme himself. The symbol appears, for example, in the sentence: "Primi numeri sesquiterti sunt .4. et .3., et primi numeri sev termini sesquialtere sunt .3. et .2." [Dic Sonneveld]. The plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et , though appearing with the downward stroke not quite vertical, was found in a manuscript dated 1417 (Cajori). The + and - symbols first appeared in print in Mercantile Arithmetic or , by Johannes Widmann (born c. 1460), published in Leipzig in 1489. However, they referred not to addition or subtraction or to positive or negative numbers, but to surpluses and deficits in business problems (Cajori vol. 1, page 128). Here is an image of the first use in print of the + and - signs

It is a working bibliography for my doctoral dissertation, The Comparative History of Numerical Notation (McGill, 2003), and related papers. Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler - born 7 October 1770, Aarau, Switzerland
- 1803-1805: worked with Johann Tralles on the topological survey of Switzerland
- 1805: emigrated to the United States of America
- February 14, 1807 to December 31, 1809: Acting Professor of Mathematics, USMA (the professorship was not created until the law of April 29, 1812)
- 1810-1813: Professor of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics, Union College, Schenectady, New York
- 1815-1817: Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey
- 1830-1843: Head of the United States Standards of Weights and Measures
- 1832-1843: Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey
- died 20 November 1843 in Philadelphia, age 73
Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler was born in the town of Aarau, in the northern (German) part of Switzerland on 7 October 1770. At the age of sixteen he entered public administration in the town of Bern. There he studied jurisprudence at the University of Bern and began his practical education in land surveying. While in Bern, he came under the influence of Johann George Tralles, a promising young German mathematician. Tralles made a deep impression on Hassler, and he began to study mathematics and geodesy instead of law. Together Hassler and Tralle worked on the topographical survey of the Canton of Bern. In the summer of 1793, Hassler went to Paris and studied under the astronomers Lalande, Borda, Delambre, and Lavoisier. In 1798, the French invaded Switzerland and Hassler returned to his native town of Aarau. He held several public offices over the next several years to include Attorney General of Switzerland. He also continued to work with Tralles on various geodetic surveys. In 1803, the French government assumed control of all geodetic surveys in Switzerland. Hassler was unable to work under French control and in 1805 he emigrated with his family to the United States.

THE 2001 MAA NORTH CENTRAL
SECTION SUMMER SEMINAR BOOKS ON THE HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS
For this summer seminar, it would be very nice if we had a collection of books to consult. I really don't want to bring several boxes of books with me, so if you can find some of the things on the list below in your library, please bring it along. To avoid lots of copies of the same things, let's coordinate what you will bring by sending Ivy Knoshoag at iknoshaug@bemidjistate.edu . Those items marked by a bold dot are available at Bemidji State University so there is no reason to bring along copies of them. You need not feel restricted to this list. Bring something interesting of a historical nature - the more variety the merrier. The following books deal with some aspect of the history of mathematics, with a heavy concentration on the history of the calculus. Only a few, Baron 1969a, Boyer 1959a, Edwards1979a, Grattan-Guinness 1980, and Toepliz 1963a deal with large portions of the history of calculus. The others concentrate on an individual, a period, or a concept.
